Can anyone recommend a good training center near St. Louis MO

by Jason Sidener on 05 June 2007 - 18:06

For schutzhund or just obiedence?

by ShellysMax on 05 June 2007 - 18:06

Well, I don't mean to sound stupid but not sure what shutzhhund is. I am new to all this, I have a very smart, very sick but still very smart little guy and want to do what is best for him. My vet did recommed that I get training for him he didn't say what kind. Just said that the should train my GS.

He may not be a schutzhund candidate but they will evaluate him when you visit the club,,,,with his sickness he would not be up to that kind of training for many months,,,,akc clubs have clinics and obedience meets everywhere and most Petsmarts have classes, some are good and some arent,.

The one in Tyler Texas is greatest I have ever seen.....but that a rare thing.....You can do those kind of classes but because of his bad beginning   , Schutzhund is a growling sport and even for a pup is a big task and he may not be up for that right now......obedience classes any where, that people who know where you live ,would be a must....

here are links for 3 of the major organizations here in the u.s.  go to these sites  and find the clubs in the st. louis area.  i know there are several.  go visit, shop around and find one that feels right.  even if your dog is not a candidate for protection work, all dogs will benefit from some obedience work.  some enjoy tracking as well.  you won't know until you try.

good luck.

ShellysMax. Before you start training your little guy, I think I read in your posts he has week legs from no activity and is in poor health. You might be better served to get him in better health and more toned and just spend some time with him.  The poor thing has been through a lot, give him some time to adjust and gain some strength.

A little outside of where you are, in Du Quoin/Pickneyville, IL, is Laura Zoller.  She is the US side of EurosportK9, run by Josef Mavrik, who this year is taking 4 or 5 dogs to the World Championships.

It sounds like you need obedience training to start...have your dog boarded there for a month, very reasonable rates, to do Obedience training.  Once your dog is in better shape, she can hook you up.  YOu can reach her at  lhzoller@hotmail.com, or 618-542-6545.

Shelly, get the dog healthy and then worry about training. You have plenty of time.

Shelly,

Great advise here, get Max healthy first before you start any real training with him.  In the mean time look up clubs on the web sites supplied.  Go ahead and go watch and visit various clubs. Get to know the people.  You will find a club that fits you but don't feel rushed. It took us over a year to find the right fit.  Even if you don't want to do Schutzhund you can still learn the obedience and tracking.  Max is a lucky boy.

Thank you all so much,

I am going to look into all this, I will contact Laura I believe she sent me an e-mail. Once Max is on his feet we will get working on this..

Thanks again.

Shelly
