saveapet, my husband is the USA tattooer who has the code C in our region (A). So, if your no. is accurate, he would have tattooed that particular dog in 1997 as an individual registration. When he does individual registrations, he lets the puppy owner pick the last 4 digits, but makes the first three mandatory as the identification for the region, his code and the birthyear of the dog.  I checked his old tattoo booklets, but could not find anything. Also, you have one digit too many. USA tattoo no.s have 7 digits, not 8. Please shave the dog's ear and try to decipher it again. Could some of these numbers actually be letters?

For example: AC7 (as explained above) AA (USA assigns this letter combination to the registered breeders) D1 (the first puppy in alphabetical order from the breeder's D-litter, males first, then females).

Anyway, this dog in question would be turning 10 years old in 2007. Unless somebody used my husband's code, but I find that unlikely.

Hey Chris,

it is an 8 digit tattoo, looks like it was made with a 4 digit set as the numbers are off set.tattoo

Thanks for that info chris.  It's possible he was born early this year.  he's five to six months according to our vet.  Do people put fake tattoos on dogs?

Chris:  If the dog were imported, does the SV/Germany  use more than 7 digits?  I just checked my paperwork on my Zorba from the Netherlands (Raad van Beheer), but his tattoo was 7 digits too.

saveapet,

this tattoo is quite strange. No, my husband did not do that.

First of all, if the dog is only five to six months old, we would remember that. Tattoos are done at about 7 to 9 weeks of age. A tattooer needs 2.5 inches of space above the cartilage to tattoo. Also, the tattoo instrument is like a pair of pliers. That means that the tattoo is straight and not in two lines, like your photo implies. That is really weird. Plus, my husband has not done any tattoos this year so far on puppies born in 2007.

Joe T.,

the ink does not fade that quick. If the dog was 3 or 4 years old, ok, but not in a half year old dog. But you are right: Maybe somebody tried to put a tattoo over a tattoo. It just bothers me that it is my husband's tattoo code.

Sueincc,

although the SV tattooers use the same tattoo instruments (from Hauptner), they only have 6 digits (never more) because they put a "space" in it. They always have two letters followed by four numbers. The first letter indicates the tattoo region, the second one the designated tattooer and the letters then are just numerical, starting with 0001, ending with 9999. They would then start anew, since it takes quite a few years and chances that two dogs with the same identical tattoo no. are alive are almost zero. I think that is the better system.  I have had that problem with my past two litters, since it took me exactly 10 years to go through the alphabet. There are now some dogs with exactly the same tattoo no. on it, either born in 1996 or 2006, since the third digit only indicates the last number of the birth year. The USA office never took that under consideration.

Saveapet,

where is that dog located and what is his story? He might have been owned/bred by somebody who also had a dog which was tattooed by my husband, maybe the mother of this puppy.  Maybe, that is how he came up with these digits. If this is the dog pictured above, he is definitely out of showlines.
