I'm so confused with all the conflicting information out there as to if we are over vaccinating our pets.

What do I do with a female puppy about shots?  I see some opinions state that getting only the DHP or DHPP is wise, but not doing Lyme or Lepto (since it's not in my area anyway).

What do you all do for your puppies and your adults?

WOW..I had no idea about how controversial this has become!

Thanks for all your help in advance!

Good post!  I'm curious to hear the facts of this matter myself.  I know of at least one "big dog" out there in the dog world who seems violently opposed to vaccinations after puppy shots.  I've tried to follow his train of thought but can't see the logic.

Certainly it's possible that some dogs can have a bad reaction to vaccinations.  We see this same phenomenon with humans.  Some people can't get flu shots without getting wretchedly ill.  However I would be surprised to hear that the majority of dogs also get sick with vaccinations.  I always vaccinated my dogs against everything and never had a moment's trouble, but perhaps others have had some bad experiences.

Has anyone lurking ever had a dog get sick, or develop health problems, that can be tied to vaccinations?

Any scientific studies available?  If so, please point me in the right direction for my leisure reading.

I know of a friend whose puppy got sick after vaccinating. I believe it was listless and fever. Now she just uses DP. Another friend had a dog that every spring created a sore on her front leg. Biting and chewing an area. She thought it was a seasonal allergy and after a few years realised this always happened right after her annual shots. She quit the shots and the problem was solved.

I have a female that would itch too, all over, she cannot seem to eat most dog foods either so eats RAW . I got her a rabies shot last year and she began to itch again but not for as long as she use to.

I bought a import puppy this year who had only her first shots. I didn't want to give her the 5-7 Way shots so I bought  25 doses of DP because I couldn't find them singular and my vet didn't have them either.

If you Google Jean Dodds Vaccine Protocol you should come up with what I thought good info on immunizing.

Yvette,

Yes, I have and it was pretty scarey.  I've posted somewhere in the past year on this very topic.  It was a Beagle I had and she had had her first years shots with no problems.  The booster the next year caused her to go into shock and we almost lost her while at the vets.  She had a seizure and then apparently stopped breathing.  The only thing that was different this time is that she had the Lyme titer added.  However, the vet said she thought it was the reaction to the Rabis of all things.  All she told me was that this dog was now at risk whenever receiving shots and that she would need to be given something beforehand and to be watched closely afterwards if I still wanted to give her shots.  She actually advised me she would be better off NOT receiving any more shots.  We also found her to be allergic to bee stings and she dropped and went stiff from one so, she may very well just have been a very allergy prone dog.

I'm sort of on the fence about the Lyme shot.  I've heard a lot of rumors.  However, my other beagle tested positive for Lyme the same day as the above .  Go figure.

I thought of one more! Some years back  a lady I did some SAR with was coming out of the vet office as I was going in. She was picking up her dog who after had its vaccines the day before(at this vets office) began to swell up, mostly in her face area. She was still swollen some when I saw her but being released.

Tons of information to be had here.  About half way down the page is the health section.

My vet recommends dogs be vaccinated every 3 years rather than every year.
