I have a 4 yr.  old GSD from Germany of excellent lineage.  He is wonderful and healthy, big and

strong.  He has one problem, but it is driving both he and I crazy.  There is something wrong with

his one ear.  I have taken him to the vet. at least 15 times.  Vet cleans his ear, gives him antibiotics,

and sends him home.  I am now cleaning his ear everyday and it is constantly full of wax.  I know

it bothers him and I can't stand it.  The Vets tell me there is nothing I can do but clean his ear

everyday for the rest of his life.  I am really afraid because I don't know what is wrong..  Can

anyone help me?   Even when I carefully clean it each day it still bothers him I know.  I am trying to get

him an appointment at University of California Dacis Vet School.  Please help us if you can.

Vet must know what induce that problem. We can only guess what could be. First my advice is to change Vet and search for second opinion. In the meantime I suggest you to treatment dog with Advocate spot by Bayer once monthly and in period of three months. Advocate is the best all-rounder against parasites. Is it possible that there is a growth in the ear that is causing the irritation?  Has he been sedated so the vet can take a really good look?  Do you know if there was a cytology done on the "wax" to determine what kind of infection it was (bacterial, yeast, etc)?  If I were you I would be finding a new vet.

What are you feeding him? Sometimes this is from allergies. I know I had a female with a similar problem and same scenerio. Tube of panalog or otomax. I found some stuff at Petsmart called Veterinarians Choice (or something like that). it was a two stage cleaning, one the wash and two a drying creme. I swear it cleared up her problem. She is now 12+ and clean ears since she was about 6 years old. The stuff was just herbs and spices, one ing. was oil of clove, you could smell it very strong. Good luck.

I had this problem with one dog 20 yrs ago.  I was constantly cleaning the one ear that would fill daily.  He would rub it constantly and inflame the entire ear canal.  I made several trips to the vets, and many different ones sent me home with various remedies that never worked.  Finally, one new vet casually said it was probably ear mites way down in the ear canal----and they were probably there from puppyhood.  My jaw dropped.

He gave me some drops and my dog was immediately cured.  I couldn't believe all those other vets.  Amir is correct.

I had a gsd with similar problems - from age 6 mos to 7 years old.  She had a range of ear infections from yeast to bacteria, tested for staff and psydemones.  Her ears would turn bright red and I had to clean them out everyday.  Had been on a range of ear ointments to oral meds on and off.   Finally the vet decided to sedate her and flush both ears.  After that second flushing, she never once again had an ear infection and lived to 14.

Good luck with your dog.  I know how frustrating it can be to watch your dog struggle with bad ear infections.

Forgot to say---You need a new vet for a second opinion.

Oh, I also switched vets when she was 6.5.  Did not take the second vet long to fix the problem.  I agree with the others who suggested to check with another vet.

If you are feeding a food with wheat in it---switch. Wheat has always been the root of my dogs ear problems.

I am trying to find some where to purchase Advocateby Bayer.  Does anyone know if that

will hurt by boy if he proves not to have earmites?
