while it's true that some dogs love to track even if they've eaten prior to track training, Yellow rose is talking about just starting a young dog on his first track. always start a dog on an empty stomach to make sure that he is definately going to be interested in finding that food. then after you notice that your particular dog doesn't need this to stimulate him you can feed how you wish. if he does better without feeding before hand then continue withholding his food.

I got up Sunday morneing and layed out a tract for him and did what was mentioned above, he did great. I had a silly question about commands, most of the people doing schutzhund use German commands right? I have always used German on my other GSD's for basic ob just wondered if that was the norm. Thanks for the info.

okay here we go: Did you get up early this am and lay a track for your working dog...? No. I got up LATE and laid tracks for three dogs. Shelley doesn't do early mornings. What did you do to get your dog ready this am for tracking.? Nothing. Did you withhold food last night for the tracking this am? No, but I fed early last night, no breakfast for dogs tracking this morning. What kinds of food do you suggest for laying a track.....? Leftover pot roast has always worksedbest for me, but any meat/pultry will do. What is the best place to track a new pup ? My favorite is finely disced dirt, but 4-6" grass is fine too if it isn't too dry, and snow is okay as well. practice in your own yard or go to a foreign field or place? Anyplace free of major distraction EXCEPT the obedience/protection training field. How many leads do you use and do you color code your leads for tracking? One to start. Two sometimes later, one under each leg like driving a cart horse. LOL. Yes, different colors or shapes (Ex: 1 flat and 1 round. Do you let your dog watch you lay a track? Beginning baby pups, yes. Later no. When do you introduce "articles" and how do you introduce the articles to the dog.....before putting them on the tracking field....What are the articles made of and can I make my articles? I start articles OFF the track, sometimes even in my living room. I use anything and everything for articles. Really horrible cassette tapes people left in my car are a favorite, especially country music, scented with 30 min. in my waist band or ??? Small socks/gloves without mates, discarded wallets, bits of carpet, overstretched hair bungees, all good for tracking to start. Rubber does not hold scent well. Do you suggest someone walking beside you on your initial tracts to encourage the dog...or do you encourage the dog and how...? At first, just me and the dog, short curvy tracks with lots of food at the end, calm encouragement till the pile of food is devoured, then crazy play and praise as we run back to the van. Later people/other dogs (not too close) various noises for distraction. Contact information Disclaimer Privacy Statement Copyright Information Terms of Service Cookie policy ↑ Back to top |
