$200 for a vaccine titer????

What lab do they use.  I think that is rather high.

I'll bet you anything it was the lepto vaccine, especially if it was Ft. Dodge.  I work at a clinic and when the new Ft. Dodge w/lepto came out we gave it a try but 90% of dachshunds and bostons (don't know why those breeds) had a reaction similar to your poor girls if they were not pre medicated.  Never saw it in a large breed, but we switched back to Pfizer vaccs after that.

Rezkat5 It might be a chance but I am going to take it. Rabies I believe can be one of the worse to cause a problem with the immune system in a dog. If a dogs immune system is compromised, a vet will give a doctor note so dogs do not need this in communities where it is required. My dogs are house dogs and when outside I am almost always with them. It is to cold in the winter... to hot in the summer. Spoiled brats!!

I don't know what happened to my last comment but here it is again.

distemper/parvo titer 79.59$, lepto titer 125.89$, rabies titer 175.00$

If Fort Dodge has issues I was not aware of,thank you for telling me.

The lab they use is Antec

VBK9- after changing to Pfizer vaccinations did things change? Why "esp Ft Dodge" with the lepto?

I have a female who was given a lepto vaccine at 1 yr. old along w/her rabies as her final series. She had a reaction & has never been the same since...itchiness & chewing at hotspots since she had it. She had never chewed before. Lepto is not a core vaccine so you may request to not have that given. I have never given any of my dogs a lepto shot since & my vet does not recommend it.

As for rabies I do not have that choice. By law a dog must be given a rabies shot at 16 wks. & at 1 yr...every 3 yrs. after that. Our county is under a rabies quarantine right now as 2 dogs tested positive recently. Even tho my dogs are never alone outside I can't and won't take the chance. Way to risky.

I worked for vets for a total of 12 years, and lepto and rabies were the big offenders as far as reactions go.  Still, I've only seen a very few reactions (maybe 4-5) in all those years.

Xando where abouts do you live? That is scary stuff. But guess I will still chance it....

Tell your vet you want Jean Dodd, Hemopet, to do the titers. She charges $75 for a rabies which most won't want, $35 for distemper/parvo.  All your vet needs to do is draw the blood, you can package it and mail it yourself along with a check.  Read Jean Dodd's vac information on the net and you will find out why you don't need to titer for lepto. Check out the websites DKiah has posted above.

Charging high prices for titers is a game with vets. They figure they will charge an outrageous price for a titer, so you will opt for the vac instead. Each vac costs your vet under $1.00,  you do the math. If your vet insists every dog needs an annual vac regardless of its exposure to other animals, it's time to find a new vet. He or she is not following the latest recommendations of the vet schools.

Trailrider...I'm in Montana. As far as I know there are 2 counties under a mandatory 90 day quarantine due to 2 dogs in 1 county testing positive for rabies & the other for a wild animal testing positive. Even if you have a fenced yard rabid animals can still find a way in. Bats are known carriers so fences won't stop them.  Because rabies is fairly common in Montana we do have the law. As for my dogs, if I wanted to take them anywhere out of the county I must show proof of the vaccine being given.

p.s. Unfortunately the only way to test for rabies once an animal has come into contact  (if you cannot show proof of vaccination)is to send the head into a labratory. The 2 families who owned the dogs are also undergoing a series of rabies shots just to be on the safe side.

Crap! I am in Montana! I haven't hears of any outbreaks in my neck of the woods. I'll call my vet tomorrow. All my dogs are current except the pup. Who do you have to show proof to if you take them out of county? Are you in one of the counties with the quarantine? I;m in NW MT are you in Eastern? It is such a huge state.
