I thought garlic was bad for dogs? Is it, also, a matter of amount?

i am also confused about the garlic and onion's being bad for the dogs. My Grandma's dogs on received table scraps, never any commerical dog food. What ever she cooked for the family is what they also had. She used alot of both. the dogs were healthy and lived long lives.

I remember laughing so hard when they ate sphagetti, they would have tomatoe sauce all over their faces. When they were finnished they would line up at the sink to get washed off. She bribed them all with a meatball after face wash.

Well, she only used a bit for the flavor, and I can't remember now if she cooked it or not, and you are correct about onions, I had a yellow lab that would vomit violently if he someone snuck him a bite of a sandwich with onions in it, but what can I say, that fussy yorkie ate it! With no problems, and every dog (and cat) I ever had always loved Italian sauce and garlicky meatballs ! 

Garlic has been used commercially or non commercially on dogs for centuries..I'm holding, in my hand, a bottle of Brewers Yeast Tablets with garlic, from a well known dog food nutrient maker.   I have given garlic for years to my horses, to ward off fleas ,and gnats and fleas, and I have given all by german shepherds garlique for years also..If I am out , I sprinkle garlic powder on dog food and mix...I dont measure it, I use my instinct as to how much....

Its like anything else you eat.  There may be some animal that has a reaction to it.. I dont have that experience with garlic. I eat alot of it on meat and salads and sprinkle all my chicken before frying. Never had any bad reaction and a lot of dog foos companies use it.
