EMT,
If you want to sell better pups than those around you then you will need to fork out more than $1500.
You did not state what your training background is.
If you plan on selling working line pups then you had better be able to describe momma dog's strength and weaknesses in the protection/working area. The folks looking for these pups expect a breeder to tell them IN DETAIL about mom, dad and the pups.....oh yes puppy testing.
You should also talk to some breeders that you know to discuss how lines will mesh together. There are varying opinions out there but my belief is if you take that showline male of yours and get a strong eastern european workingline female you are going to have a house full of fear biters. After the public gets a taste of that you may not be able to sell your next litter.
Five months of looking may be alot of time for you, but the people I know spent twice that much time before selecting two dogs to start a line with. Your only specification was sable and working....East German or Czech? First generation import or a more watered down 3rd generation with perhaps a little SCH sport introduced. IPO or PSA background? Or pedigreed with Schutzhund only? If you have never owned high drive dog that wakes up every morning expecting to be in charge, which is only truly happy biting some Meth head on the south side of Detroit at 3am in a dark alley....well it can be a significant emotional event for the owner.
This is just the tip of the iceberg. But these are the things that must be considered prior to breeding dogs that are simply "better than the crap being raised around me."

EMTTGT06,
I have already speant over 10,000 dollars for 2 trained grown imports. They are not titled yet (SchH title). I would not even dream of breeding them yet. It really does sound like you just want to make a quick buck. Why don't you start off with raising some pot belly pigs. If you can handle that, meaning the food, place for it, cleaning up after it, taking it for mile walks, then invest some time and money into the gsd.
Start small then dream big,
John

Hey Folks,
The guy had the stones to bring up a topic and solicit feedback/advice. The guy may be looking for the quick buck or he may not know what he doesn't know. Pot belly pig comment borders on a cheap shot

NOT A CHEAP SHOT AT ALL
Start with a smaller project of breeding. If you can handle it, then go bigger. The guy wants to breed, but doesn't even have time to train and title his own male gsd. If you don't have the time you can't do it. A cheap shot would have been to tell him to raise an ant farm. I don't mean to offend him, but my dogs are my life. They mean everything to me. If I didn't have the time for them, then they wouldn't be mine. Yes it would be hard to get rid of them, but harder to see them in an unsuitable place.

Patch,
Unless I overlooked a post, he never said he didn't have time to train and title his own dogs. He asked for breeding specific info. A guy asking about breeding GSD aint gonna try breed pot belly pigs just so he can dream big.
Guys like Newbie are either gonna get some valid opinions such as ASP 1 for example where he suggests to buy a titled bitch and mate her with a dog other than the male he owns. OR they are gonna get advice like go breed pigs.
I understand why people have short triggers on the breeding issue. Let's just be realistic enough to know that someone like Newbie is probably gonna get into breeding one way or another. So we can either try to point him down a path that will have a positive outcome for the breed or we can just hope he decides to breed pigs.

AZSHEP6,
Well if his male isn't title and he is looking for a female for 1000-2000 dollars. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that he wants to breed soon. He should be training towards a title, he should have another 13 months to get it titled. We have too many people out there breeding for the wrong reasons. This is straight up B.S.
The guy isn't asking for breeding info, look at the post again. He is asking for info on where to buy cheap dogs so he can start up a small family kennel. I get sick and tired of money grabbing breeders who brag about how great the bloodline is, only after you look, to find out it was the 7th cousin to the grand sire's side.

EMT, First let me say I am NOT gonna rip on you... Please read the following :-)
Where are you with the Basics ??
These are just a few of what I would call the Basics...OFA's (are they done yet or do you intend to), Genetics (what is your knowledge level of what is and what is not considered genetic issues with the GSD), History (of the breed in general and breed standards), Training (have you any experience in SchH or other working styles), Recognition ( can you identify things like Health issue, Temperament issue, Genetic disorder, Trainability, and Drive Levels), Experience (with breeding, vaccines, sanitation, socialization, Buyer Education, Responsible breeding practices, Contracts = What are you willing to do to ensure the puppy is safe for the rest of it's life) Buyer Education (how prepared are you to TRULY educate your buyers, and FOLLOW UP with up with them and for how long, the life of the dog ? ).
Maybe this is worth considering.... If your answers to these questions are What is that. or I don't know. or well I have to find out. Then maybe you could consider finding a breeder in your area who would be willing to Mentor you for a couple of years, Help you find a dog with a great pedigree that you could learn with, earn titles on, and really learn the ropes of how to "Properly" raise a litter of pups. There is alot of work involved in raising a litter of pups "PROPERLY" !! There is even more to be learned about how to "Appropriately" place pups into the "RIGHT" homes, If you can't read drive levels (and I'm not saying you can't) you WILL put the wrong dog in the wrong home, and then where will that dog end up ?? Typically at a shelter somewhere. CONTINUED>>>>>
