Take a look around your campsite before you bring your dogs in. My boyfriend and I usually sweep the site before we leave to make sure we pack out all our trash, and usually some from the campers before us, but we never thought to look before we set up.

Two weekends ago one of the dogs swallowed a fish hook another camper left behind and had to be taken to the vet to have it removed from her throat. It was expensive, and I ended up spending the whole day driving to the vet and waiting for my dog instead of enjoying the river and the sunshine!

Thanks for the heads-up.  I go camping at a place that has a lake for fishing across the highway.  Many fisherman camp in the same place I camp.  Your trouble may have saved me and my dog from the same fate.  Hope everything worked out for the best for you and your dog.

That's a really sensible tip to share,  Thanks crimsonribbon !   :-)

Thanks for the heads up! We just bought a new (to us) camper and have been looking forward to our first trip!

Good advice!

Also make sure the campground where you are planning to stay allows GSD's. More and more are banning them and other "dangerous breeds".  I just had that experience and will never go back to that campground again or any other that has breed specific bans even if they don't address the GSD. I'll spend my money where they enforce their dog rules, not ban breeds they perceive as dangerous..

Great advise.  Also try to leave the camp site better then you found it.  My husband and I are certified Leave No Trace trainers and always encourage people to follow the priciples of LNT.  If you can pack it in, you can pack it out.

One of the things that bother me the most is the amount of broken glass.  Not at campsites specifically but so many times I've taken my dogs to a trail to walk them and there's broken glass all over the place.  REALLY pisses me off.

Good tip!  I also sweep the area for leftover fragments of trash.  Some people act like pigs and leave their trash on the campsite, and because of the food smell my dog is attracted to their debris.  I pick up all the plastic scraps so my dog won't be tempted to eat them.  No good comes from that.

Thanks for the extra thought, I find many things to look for and that wasn't one of them.

Crimsonribbon ,I cannot understand the mentality of "some" fishermen. It seems that "Some" fishermen loves to litter and don't have any respect or decency to pickup after themselves. I've gone to  a couple of beautiful parks with a nice big lake and often I see trash that a fisherman had left behind. I see items from the gel like plastic fish that has the sparkles inside, fishing wires to the actual Hook!

I certainly hope your dog doing better.
