Hello Everyone,

Recently I mated my GSD female.  A thought came to my mind what could be the possible logical or scientific reason for Lock after mating in Canines.

One possible reason is to ensure that no other male mates with the female but then this is true for any species but in other species it is not there then why only in canines.

Second reason to ensure injection of sperms but then as I have heard and read it is not necessary for female to get pregnant without locking also females get pregnant. Then why Locking is present?

And if you actually go to see it is a very valnerable position if the canines mating are in the wild. Any predator or any other male can easily attack the pair.

What exactly is the process of locking?

One factor, according to my reproduction vet, is that this keeps the female in an upright position while the post-ejaculate washes the semen toward the target.  While in a tied position, she cannot sit, squat or urinate and thereby squirt the semen back out.  This is why vets will instruct you to walk a bitch for 15-20 minutes after an artifical insemination with fresh semen, not allowing her to sit or urinate.   With live cover this is not required.

I would have to say it is only to ensure as many sperm as possible stay up inside the female. I don't believe that it has anything to do with other males mating her, because if it was allowed, she could breed several males in one day, and they would still be able to lock (or tie.)

This is just a theory, from my own experience and observation but I believe that if the pair has a lock longer than 15 minutes, the bitch has a better chance of conceiving. One of my males was bred twice to a certain female and the ties were 7 and 10 minutes, respectively. The bitch didn't take. Those were  the shortest ties I have seen in 15 years of breeding dogs. Maybe it was a coincidence and I am sure other factors could have been involved, but I think that may have had a lot to do with it.

That's my guess...

Stacy
