Hello, I would like to ask all of you Is linebreeding necessary to produce a good dog? As per my knowledge ther are some top dogs with no line bredding. for e.g. Nando Gollerweiher.

I know that linebreedind was very important to bring uniformity of type and other caracteristics, but as in life, we must know the time to stop! I mean, we have reached a good uniformity and the German Shepherd is today a very well selected breed. We dont need to linebreed so often anymore, lets keep this instrument to a case where it will realy be necessary. The genetic diversity brings health to a population, lets keep our genetic material healthy.

Line bredding is when you have the same dog on one side of the pedigree more than once, like a pup will have the same dog as his father and great grandfather And it should not be done closer than 3 on 3. There is also inbreeding, which is different that is when you have the same dog on both sides of the pedigree more than once, like a pup will have the same grandfather on the mother and fathers side. They did it mostly years ago when they had a real good dog to keep the bloodline close. Now people have found out that it can cause some health issues if the bloodline is to close or if a dog has to much of the same blood. Sandra

Actually, all of this is inbreeding. As far as I know doggie people came up with the term "line-breeding" to distinguish between what you might call distant and close inbreeding. And I've never heard it being "1 side of the pedigree"? It's always been really close, or distant, taht's all. Maybe I've been missing something. But close/inbreeding is basically mother-son, sister-brother, etc. All in the same last 2 gens. Line-breeding is further removed (distant) - grandfather to granddaughter, cousin to cousin, etc. Never mind common ancestors further back. I've never heard line-breeding referring to only sire or dam side.

Linebreeding is exactly what you have stated, the Ol'Line Rebel. It's all technically "inbreeding", but classed "linebreeding" for 2-3, 3-2 linebreedings and further apart. Real "inbreeding" is sister/brother father/daughter, etc., which is closer than 2-3 or 3-2. It has nothing to do with which side the linebreeding is on, which is why you see: 4,4-4 (which means that the pup's linebreeding has the same dog in common in his ancestry. It's not necessarily a bad thing, it just depends on which dog you choose to linebreed. Hope this helps.
