lewis - though your dog will indeed grow out of pano, there are some things you can do to help. some vets prescribe steroids for the dog's pain, but buffered aspirin as needed is probably safer in the long run. pano usually occurs during periods of rapid growth of the long leg bones. if you are feeding a high protein food, you may want to switch to a lower protein, but still high quality, food. the dog can determine the amount of exercise she's ready for; she might be limping today, not tomorrow, and limping on a different leg that day after that. (that's why it's also sometimes called wandering lameness) good luck with your girl!

This has been discussed several times, you may want to do a search on threads but here's a quickie, Panosteitis aka pano, wandering lameness, long bone disease, growing pains is a pretty commmon thing in a lot of breeds... not even always large breeds.. seen it in a sheltie..... It can last for a while, most typically occurs from about 6 months to 18 - 24 months, has been documented in dogs as young as 2 months as old as 5 years.... my husbands dog had it about 3yrs old.... There are many remedies and suggestions and "voodoo ideas" but in my honest opinion, it must run its course so not overfeeding, keeping quiet and watching the food you are feeding to be sure calcium, protein etc is not too high.. do not oversupplement If you can't find what you are looking for, just ask away

I 2nd what's said here. A pup I had until I sold her at 6 mos got it from about 4 mos to 5-1/2 mos or so (she seemed fine by time I sold her). She would start to playfully run (or rather, spring where 2 fronts hit at same time) around the back yard and land on her fronts and yelp out sometimes. Don't worry about it; I'm sure for most dogs it will literally be just "growing" pains. Later having another pup (who incidentally never exhibited pano) in training, the trainer objected to "PUPPY" food. She said it was just another way for the companies to get money and they try to speed up growth too much (probably high protein, as mentioned). So since then, I've not bothered with puppy food, only "dog" food. She was correct in 1 simple common-sense idea: do you make your child eat something different from you? Only when they don't have teeth!

We've had a few dogs with mild cases of Pano, but my young male had it for a little bit and worse, for a while he couldnt put weight on his front left leg, finally had to xray him went on for so long. My vets have told me to let the dog regulate his own activity, I did give him asprin a few times when it seemed to be in the back and the front and the same time. But i made changes to his diet to lower his protein level intake. Jessica
