Has anyone been using it for more than six months? what are the longterm pros and cons? please

by Hawiian2 on 03 March 2006 - 13:03

Hello Perle, We have been using Royal Canin #24 for over 2 years now. Our male had troube with very loose stools. After trying out a ton of different brands, the Royal Canin #24 really did the trick. I cannot say enough good things about it. As far as any bad long term effects, i'd say its, lugging the big heavy bag into the house! LOL hope that is of some help :-)

Many people in my club are using it for over a year and they just love it. One member whose GSD has severe allergies says that her dog does much better on this food than others. I don't know any real pros and cons but all the owners with adult dogs think very highly of the food. The dogs weight is maintained well when they are working hard during the summer months the only thing is the puppy formula (I have not researched this myself, its just observation) One member was feeding it to her puppy and the pup developed hot spots, on the recommendation of another who said that its protein content was too high for a GSD pup, she switched to another great brand and the hot spots went away. This could have been just coincidence too though. Once her pup becomes a year I think that she will return to the Royal Canin brand.

I have had my dogs on it for about 2 years. My finicky dog loves it, and all my dogs have nice coats, shiny and soft. About 6 months ago I got a new dog (5yrs old) He was extremely skinny (hip points were showing) and his coat was very DRY. His previous owner feeds her dogs purina dog chow and said "he doesn't eat". After about 1-2 months he started gaining weight and his coat was nice and soft. When his previous owner saw him she was shocked at how nice his coat was. She asked what conditioner I used on him. I said "none, I just feed him good food." LOL. Its a little overpriced but I like it. Here's a picture taken shortly after i got him: http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/410114.html Here's a current photo of him: http://www.beckerfoto.photosite.com/Andy4/IMG_3394.html Take care, Melanie

I have been using it over 2 years. Nice coats, tight stools. I seem to be able to use less food, with minimum waste, suggesting more of the feed is actually being absorbed by the dogs, not just "passing" through their systems. They love the feed. Bad side effect is the price. Stephen

I have had my dogs on GSD 24 for over 12 months now and they all have thick, healthy, shiny coats. I agree it is quite expensive but if your dogs look well on it, that's all that matters. We have also weaned 2 litters on it with no problems at all, as they are big chunky puppies. Take care Tracy

Excellent visual sale point Melanie. Andy does look so much better in the second photo.

Thanks KÖNIGTUM, I'd also like to add I like that the kibble is larger, it makes the chew, which is better for their teeth. Take care, Melanie

I have a large kennel and feed this food to ALL my personal GSDs as well as all clients dogs (or some variety of Royal Canin). I have found that the GSD food is excellent as are all the other brands. The only thing I do not like about the food besides the fact that it is expensive, is the shape of the kibble. If a dog tends to gulp his food, and not chew it, the odd shape tends to cause it getting stuck in the esophagus. They make a variety of excellent foods for various breeds and all sizes. As well, with overweight dogs, most clients pets who are being boarded here, I find the light varieties highly palatable for the overweight dogs, yet low in fat. The overweight dogs will loose weight on the light varieties if fed appropriately. The Maxi Light 27 (27 % protein) is also very useful for GSDs who have pancreatic enzyme insufficiencies. Royal Canin also has a lot of special vet diets and I am told they will be introducing a whole new line of Giant breed foods in the fall of this year. For breeders who meet their requirements, there is a method by which one can save the UPC codes and turn them in for a free bag of food, which ultimately helps cut down cost. Finally, Royal Canin is one of the most supportive of all organizations in the world when it comes to dog shows, and other dog related events. I highly recommend this food.

Ditto to all the positive comments. Blitz does very well on the RC breed specific food. The downside for me is the smell, it reminds me of rotting apples, but the dogs seem to think it smells great and that's what counts. Also, unlike many other premium foods, it's easy to find which is a plus to us since we travel a lot with Blitz and will be fulltime RV'ers in a few years. Petco carries the RC, other foods like Eagle Pak are excellent too, but it can be very difficult to find a dealer in an unfamiliar area. Most urban areas have at least one Petco in a visible location.
