Brittany

Since this site is starting to grow again I had thought that it would be a good idea to enforce this potential rule? What does everybody else think?

by EDD in Afgan on 28 February 2006 - 10:02

I have no problem with it. Where you run into problems is those who use multiple user accounts generated by multiple email accounts and would use any made up first and last name including those of other mebers.

A way to circumvent this will be easily found by miscreants who damage the integrity of this outstanding resource. Perhaps a fee or else restricting it to the registering IP at the time of joining may be workable.

EDD in Afgan, Your right and thats why registering under a FREE emailing accounts should be prohibit.Only domains from kennel (blah@thisismykenneldomain.com) website or ISP emails (AOLAccounts@aol.com) should only be allowed. It would be a great Idea to possibily install a script to have users clarify the email account that they used. To send a link that will activate their accounts. Looking at somebody's IP address is useless. Anybody who is much more advanced with computers can easily change their IP address in matters of secs (proxies).

Sounds good to me. I can't see why anyone, who is reputable, would object.

I can't agree with you more Brittany. I'm fed up with the cowards on the board attacking dogs, people and other people's principles. Everyone who has access to the internet, has a dial up and has therefore an email account that goes with that dial up. They simply choose to hide behind the freebies. And yes, IP addresses can be blocked, I know that for a fact. It's probably just a matter of time - so be patient. You can find me here: Gina Kasbergen shepherds@phreego.com ;)

I have browsed the Leerburg website and forum and in their rules it states that your user name must be your correct first and last name. It also says they can and will verify this. Any ideas on how they can do this? If they can do it so can this site? Right?

s_vargas, When I tried signing up on the leerburg site a long time ago (probably two or three years ago exact) I received an email from ED asking for my first and last name... INCLUDING my address and phone number. I felt very uncomfortable that he asked me those kind of questions (As a young Female) so I basically ignored his email and my registration was denied quite obviously. As much as I respect the first and last name policy requirements... I do not agree with asking people for their personal information.. It's invading their privacy. All ED really needed was my First and last name and my ISP email... He didn't needed my personal address.. If I was a problem he could call up my ISP and report me.

HI group, I am on another list for Search and Rescue K-9 handlers. The moderators strictly inforce the content...anything deemed vicious, indecent or slander and you are blocked from ever posting again. One warning is issued then you are off. Would that be an easy solution to the horrible lies and attacks occuring? We have 3 moderators on that particular list. If there is a violation by a poster, then they decide (all 3) to remove that individual from posting. I am fairly new, really enjoy the breed and the list..It is a priveledge to have such a list!

I have a problem with it as long as cyber stalking is condoned on the board. I've had it happen to me with one member who is signed on here under a dozen different screen names. He is convinced I am 3 or 4 different people and one of his competitors in the literary world. I am on this board under one name only, Blitzen, that's it. I am no body in the GSD world, have never bred a litter or showed a GSD and don't intend to. He has made big problems for one other poster when he researched her personal information and shared with this board her phone number, where she worked, her occupation, place of birth and her friends. I suspect he may be the same person who stalked Preston too. There are a lot of morons out there and if you have a listed phone number a google search will yield not only your address but a map to your house. If you include your name or your kennel name in your email addy, much can be learned from that alone. Maybe the odds are that this nutcase is just that, a nutcase and no real threat, but I'd just as soon not find out, thank you.
