Hi, I got into a heated discussion with a GSD breeder that had used a male GSD that had only one Testical for a stud dog. I feel that that is not supposed to be alowed. He got mad at me and said I should not have breed my female who has middle lenght hair. He said that that hereditary defect is just as bad as having only one testical. But I think other wise. what are you guyses opinions?? Jessica Thanks

Having one testicle is also a hereditary defect it is called cryptoid (excuse the spelling). A male that has one testicle will pass that along to it's off spring who will most likely have one or double cryptoid no testicles. That dog should have been fixed and never bred. As far as middle length hair, if it fits within the standard and is not considered a true long hair then it can be bred. That would be up to you cause some dogs that perfectly meet the standard can throw a long hair here or there. But a cryptoid, one testicle male should never be bred nor is it allowed. Thats my opinion

JFU Middle length hair is never a fault and falls well within the breed standard. As long as it is not a true long coat (without an undercoat) it is not considered to be a fault. It is merely between the short coat (passes) and the true long coat (does not pass). It is essentally the middle of the standard. Personally, I like the middle coated dogs. It is simply a matter of taste. One (1) testicle-now that is a very serious issue that can be definitely transferred through poor breeding and while it has ties to the genetics of both the sire and the dam, one would think that the sire's genetics would increase the trend of this condition. Unless this dog lost the testicle in an accident (it does happen) and it can be proven through veterinary records, the use of this male for breeding proves there are questionable ethics involved. We all know that genetic defects can sometimes take from one (1) to several generations to re-appear, and even the best stock can sometimes produce this condition as well as poor hips, floppy ears, poor dentition, true long coat, etc. immediately, or within a generation or two. This breeder is very seriously tempting the fate of his offspring to be monocryptiod or worse. Remember-always breed breed-worthy dogs to breed-worthy others to improve and maintain the correct standard. Essentially, always "breed up". My advice; don't argue with this backyard breeder and keep your bitch away from his dog. Just my opinions, Bob-O

Sport Dog, I agree that this topic has been entensively covered before. And I appreciate you bringing up some of the older posts. JFU may be new to our world, and needs our advice on these matters. Again, I appreciate you finding these parts of the messageboard. Hopefully, the breeder she mentions will read these post-but probably not. My typing is now so poor. Ach! Die Wetter so kalt hier ist. Zuviel Wild Turkey. Bob-O
