Berkowitz was commanded to kill by his neighbors demonic dog.

That would be the polar opposite of Hughes, who is intelligent, competent, and particularly rational in his constitution.

moons - you know I won't disagree and why not, but there certainly remains an argument about who's to say.  Some casually assert that he is evil, wrong, or the like, while he demonstrates similar or better cognitive ability than average, and doesn't seem to exhibit behavior consistent with the psychosis of other serial killers.  He has formed his world view, complete with rationale, and it happens to conflict with other philosophies to the point where civilized society recognizes his behavior as such that it violates the rights of those around him.  What I find most interesting, is when you analyze his behavior and philosophy, it is consistent with philosophical materialism.  At the base level, one might ask, is he not correct in asserting that "trees, people, animals, cars" are all simply "objects" ?  Indeed they are, formed of the same matter and energy.  Lol.  You can't love it or hate it, but this is reality.  So you then have this "advanced" organism, the human, exercising dominance over the planet, driven and selected by evolution to survive (the core of our base drives).  Hughes sees himself at the top of this food chain, for what it really is, refusing to accept the veneer of societal framework which denies its own underlying philosophies.  Explore deviance as a sociological concept and you will discover that it is not simply a liability, but also benefits society over time.

It is true that certain deviant personalities may lend an individual more useful in that context.  What I was speaking to specifically, is that deviance is considered today to be a part of every social system, and provides beneficial functions to those groups to the desired sociological end -this is fact.  One might question, what's with all this sociological mumbo-jumbo, and doesn't that conflict with your personal world view.  My answer is a resounding yes, I can't stand sociology, but it has pervaded our institutions of higher learning and the walls of government to a degree which finds it a useful tool in describing the philosophical "lay of the land".  Deviance itself is now being (or has been) redefined as a relative and environmental concept.  I won't go down that rabbit trail right now, but the indications and evidence are absolutely everywhere.  At the philosophical bottom, the same conclusions which support this trend also effectually define deviance as neither moral nor immoral.  Context is causative.

All of this points to tremendous contradiction within society's current predominate philosophical constructs.

That just sounds scary. It dismisses so much else that is useful.

THAT, is the backbone of progressive thought, whether the minions of the progressive power elite are able to wrap their heads around it or not.

by beetree on 22 November 2013 - 16:11

Oh, and you must mean our CEO's, political leaders, etc., are acceptable deviants—like in the news about that cocaine indulging Congressmen who won't resign, that type of thing?
