Moons, the nice Indian guy called me at home saying he was from "Nortonaid". I used to have Norton, but let it lapse. When I went back to read the fine print, well they aren't connected at all. I was befuddled, you don't know this but I had just woke up from my nap recouping form my early morning swim meet attendance, when he started to scare the beejuice out of me. I have decided it was a big scam, there are no good guys. They surely were playng good scammer, bad scammer with me! Luckily, it appears I will be credited all funds, in a few days, so they say.
Carlin, just wanted to say thanks for all your posts and experience, I do appreciate it. I called my Cable company, and I seem to have the speed I am paying for, but certain computers performed better when moved closer to the actual router source. Any hacking in would be via my router. I did some investigating and somehow my network settings were not what I thought they were... my password security seemed to be missing. I have since, I think corrected this. I might actually have done something right? I am hopeful.
Now, if anybody knows... since I am still going to bring this PC into a real professional to give it a good de-lousing, looks like there are upgrades? Windows 8? Should I have them install that, while they are doing whatever?
So far so good. Seems to be okay at the moment.....better knock on some wood!

Windows 8?
I haven't heard many people say they were thrilled with the upgrade. In fact, many rolled back to 7. I am sticking with 7, because unless there is some huge benefit, to me it's not worth installing a new OS. Speed shouldn't be affected by distance from the router unless the signal is intermittent on the edge of the reception. LAN would be quicker, but if you set up the the router to transmit on "n" only, with all optimal settings, I can't see it being a bottleneck unless you've got some ridiuclously fast IP. I run 55 mbps off of a router, no matter how far away I am from it. Yes, settings are key with those things.

Bee,
never let anyone have access to your computer remotely.
It's like giving them the keys to your front door, hell it's standing there holding the door open for them.
Windows 8 really blows, not much worst than 7, just different.
I hate wireless, give me a cable any ole day.
The best security for Windows systems is Windows own in my opinion.
Your router should have default settings as when you first got it, there isn't much security to a router.
If your out of signal, then your outta signal, unless your on a cable.

You would think I'd learn my lesson.
And really I don't let anyone near my Macs. I just have a tendency to think everyone else understands the PC better than I do, and and it makes me an instant sucker.
Carlin, I spent the morning educating myself on router stuff. I have a LAN. I have the setting that decides "n" or not with everything else. I have been checking speeds on all machines all over the place. All I can say is my speed will vary wildly from place to place and from time to time. They can all be outrageously fast or stupidly slow... except for the MotherMAC.
The cable guy said I am paying for 30 mpbs, but I have exceeded that with the MotherMAC. I even had the PC going past the 50's when it was in the same room as the router. He also said, that what I pay for gets "shared" by the number of machines online at the same time. We did an experiment together testing this one and that one, all off, then turned on. It is far from a consistent thing at my house!
My house configuration is not typical...kind of like an L with the router in the top part of the L and the PC in the kitchen part, at the end of the "foot".
Since things are behaving today... so far... I remain ever hopeful this mess is over.

The idiot just called again. I said who is this? He said, "This is the same person from Microsoft." LOL I didn't even wait, just hung up, after that LIE.
This is going to make me activate caller ID and all that other stuff. Just so I can call the cops on him.

If somebody wants a real start button in Windows 8 like Windows 7 has, you just need to get program called start8, very wonderful program that makes you feel sort of like using windows 7 on windows 8.
