Smokeless powder for the most part very stable.
I shoot black powder BabyEagle.

What's used in fireworks is unique to the manufacturer and always their own custom blend.

Then you have household chemicals very easy to get and mix together, also found all over the internet.
The real secret is how it's all packaged in the device.

OKaaaaay. Seems I made a wee little mistake, skimming this article in reading. This is where I saw "firecracker", but it wasn't Tamerlan, it was attributed to Faisal Shahzad. But this article also says, the kit accounts for 3 lbs of black powder he would have access from buying the one kit, and he got the second kit for free. 

"Barely legal" is how the kit is described by the company that makes them. So total of 48 shells. I have no idea if that make sense to our resident bomb makers. This article seems to think it is significant enough for "serious damage". The article also notes five other businesses are within N.H and only an hours drive from Boston.

... Hey here is another thought, just popped in! Maybe T&D shoplifted some fireworks! The mom has a shoplifting record you know! The apple doesn't fall far from the tree? Hmm? How do you like them apples???????


 

Might make Cider, but I doubt they are the right kind of apples for cider.

Fireworks are also regulated, shell size being one of those regulations.
Not quantity.
Barely Legal is simply a sales ploy.
