I'll agree with 3rd poster on. Your topic heading states it;  "NEW". One must crawl before he can walk.

When is a big dial ? When helper get bit in the neck ? of course handler will get better ,not to critique anyone just a warning to the helpers ,be aware !

by Duderino on 14 August 2011 - 17:08

The handler probably should have warned the helper that it was just a show dog and even if he let him go, he's not going to bite you very hard and it'll be a short grip and chances are, even when he was let loose, you can out run him.  Dog shouldn't even be on an arm, his foundation grip work is incomplete.  He should be on a bite wedge or possibly even leather, he does not know how to bite.

Thanks for your expert opinion Duderino  ,but my post is not about the dog

by Duderino on 15 August 2011 - 16:08

Yep, I know just adding a little levity.  I think part of the responsibility rests on the shoulders of the helper.  If you know the handler is a rookie, ask someone with more experience to either coach or handle the beginner's dog for them.  If you don't know the person you can usually tell right away by the way they handle the leash.  I've even gone as far as to have people put the dog away and bring it out again after an equipment check and short handling session.  Part of the reason is the fact that I never want to have negative sessions in any phase but the obvious one would certainly be, I don't need anymore holes than I already have.

Just once!

I would love to see the "experts" who are so quick to criticize someone's work.........post a video of themselves doing work!

Not a photo of your dog, not a video or photo of somone else working your dog, you.....working your dog!

Keyboard wanna be handlers....let alone trainers

Just once I would like to see a dog from Canada that actually worked and a handler/trainer that actually knew how to do the same.  How many FRIIIs are in Canada these days,,,,2?  Or is it still 1?

Oh, and BTW there's no need to post any of those home movies that you call work.  That drivel works on newbies who are amazed by shiny things but in my world that's pet store training.
