I have a 2 1/2 yo female purebred German Shepherd dog and for the past few weeks she is starting to show signs of being a decent single purpose drug dog. Good ball and prey drives. I hide stuff in and around vehicles and I put her on a 6' lead and give her search command and she goes around entire vehicle , sniffs tire area, door jambs, even the trunk. I opened my trunk earlier this evening and told her to search , she stepped back , jumped IN the trunk and search entire area of trunk...  Very Interesting ....

My question is this : How can I see if she is Qualified to do this type work ? Either way , I do believe that she would make a good SAR K9. Just my opinion though.

PLEASE , If anyone is going to offer comments , I will appreciate it if you would refrain from one sided negative remarks. I do not mean to offend anyone on here. Thanks so very much.............Shawn

You would need to start putting her on scents contact a local police Department that has a K9 unit or a K9 training facility

Baretta9-

You should PM  Slamdunc and ask him for his opinion, most Depratments choose to indroduce the odors themselves.

Question:  anyone tell us how Search & Rescue is organised in the USA ?  Is it
all handled by / connected with the emergency services, or are there civilian
volunteer groups, the way there are in the UK ?
Cos if there are such groups/clubs in the States, would it not be possible for
Shawn to find the nearest one, and join in their training / learn about what is
required of dog and handler ?

There are SAR groups that are volunteer civilians in Ohio and as I'm sure several other states. I don't know of any LE agency that uses their dogs for SAR in our area. I'm sure they could track if requested but we have nothing implemented to respond for an emergency. All the LE dogs here are Track(People-Articles)/Narcotics detection/Protection trained.
