Bob-O

by Bob-O on 17 September 2006 - 22:09

In the absence of any medical issues, I would think that the dog is on-edge with his new surroundings and is a bit nervous. I have a working-line bitch that did the same thing when she was riding with me in my truck, to the end that my shirt was soaking wet. Since this was the only place she would ever salivate in this way, I had to spend a lot of time conditioning her for taking a ride without being nervous. It worked 100%. Our veterinarian suggested a medication to calm her a bit, but I tried my approach first and was successful. It did require about four (4) weeks or so of conditioning before I solved the problem. I had a Malamute many years ago that got very car sick while bringing him from his breeder to my house, a nearly four hour trip. For many months after that he could not get in a crate or a car without drooling uncontrollably but it eventually passed as he realized that all car rides were not going to be bad for him, and most were actually going to be fun and to be looked forward to. This may be similar if your dog was sick on his trip to the States.

Excessive drooling is a common sign of stress. I often see this with dogs comming into the kennel for boarding and training. Most dogs get over it within a matter of a day. How long have you had this dog?
