one of my male recently bought from Germany is showing this problem. Its not all the time but sometimes it becomes so excessive that it seems that has a fountain in his mouth. It not only worries me from medical point of view but it also embarasses me when someone tries to pat the dog and he gives him a lick real full of sliva. What could be the problem. What are options to get rid of this problem?

Have you check his mouth if there is any growth inside?

by suhailf on 17 September 2006 - 13:09

apparently there is no growth inside. he is eating well and active and working very nice. Vet suspect it could be small sized ulcer somewhere which could be treated with wash of saline water and Bcomplex. I am still not satisfied with the diagnosis.

Could be his saliva glands. Get a second opinion. How old is he?

Vom Brunhaus

Well if you buy dogs over there that are adults some times there are problems and may be the reason he was sold. At the moment it is strictly a vetrinary issue. If your not satisfied take him back to the vet or try another vet.

This sounds like a nervous problem, I too purchased a male about 5 year back and he came and he drooled and foamed ALOT. Took him to the vet to rule out disease and illness, my vet put him on a small dose of dramamine to calm him and the drooling decreased. He told me it was a nervous issue and he recommended placing him in a one person home. He was neutered and placed in a single mans home and as long as only the man is with him and no other visitors he no longer shows this drooling but if approached by others he drools and even still foams at the mouth.

If the vet found nothing its probably not much to be concerned about. Could be due to the way his mouth is shaped. Lots of dog breeds drool excessively because of that. My fathers Bull Mastiff always had strings of drool hanging down her face, especially after eating and drinking and when out for walks or when playing. Just getting a whiff of something would start the drooling. Sniffing other dogs, smelling food, other people. And it always seemed as if she wanted to dry her face of on your legs and hands. Lovely! If your dogs lower jaw is fairly wide and the flews (lips) are not very tight, but loose and kind of hanging down, they will not keep the dogs saliva in the mouth and the mouth is always 'running'. The dog produces more saliva because nothing stays in. That said... excessive salivation can be due to Rabies (if this started recently, check the dog and everyone who has been in contact with him, no vaccination is 100%! you better make sure you rule this out completely, especially given the current situation in your country right now), irritants in the mouth (something he has picked up or been in contact with including chemicals), poisoning (ie plants he has chewed on, chemicals he has been in contact with, including household cleaners), obstruction, lesions, ulcerations in the esophagus, paralysis of parts of the mouth or voicebox - basically something that inferes with his ability to swallow the saliva.

The dog is properly vaccinated for rabies and there are no other signs of rabies at all. Its just saliva but no froth or foam at all. Saliva is also not very thick of bubblish but just very thin and watery. Its not permanat thing either. He didnt develop it in China. He arrived Pakistan from Germany and it was hot and we thought that he was oversweating through his tongue. Now in China its been two weeks for the dog and the weather is superb. He had stopped salivating lately but it might be due to the training or exercise. Apparently he is very healthy and is eating and digesting food properly. I think he is still nervous and somehow his salivery glands are hyper sometimes due to certain reasons. Vet checked him and put him on Bcomplex, normal saline mouth wash and suggested to add yogurt in his food. He is not drolling at all for last six hours now. He wasnt for few days and but this afternoon he did it profusely. Rabies; a far cry.
