Just for fun I want some opinions on my broken down dog. http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/317315.html

She's pretty.I'm no expert but I like to see a little less angulation and croup just a titch higher. I stay away from fast normal hips.Nothing is a guarentee I suppose. What does your vet think is going on?

by Egsd on 15 September 2006 - 18:09

Way too much angulation, thats show lines for ya!

Vet says arthritis. I wont do hip x-rays at her age and waste my $. Vet didn't recomend them either. She wont be bred so there is no point. Also could anyone translate what is said in German about her? I agree about the angulation. Whoever said it was suppossed to help them go all day, is full of SH!#. She hasn't enough power in her back end to jump in the truck. Not sure what she was like when she was younger but 7 is waaaay too younge in my eyes for a dog to be "old". My stait backs, run and jump sooo much better.

She appears from the picture to be a bitch at the upper limit in size. She is a bit long in loin and lacks pigment. I don't think her rear angulation is extreme at all, she is stretched to much for the photo and the ground she is set-up on is not even, it's sloping down. This gives a distorted view of her top-line, both top line, rear angulation and length and lay of croup look fine to me. Judging by the pictures of her progeny she appears to be a little better than average in producing however hip scores on the progeny listed leave much to be desired, unfortunately no improvement in that area. Can't comment on Character or drives.

Yes that pic is not very good. Not what she looked like when she got here to say the least. She is much more red and she doesn't stand stretched like that. Right now, I think she looks better in person than in the photo. She has some drive, allot of ball drive and she passed that to her pups. Only thing is they get distracted too easily and come off the bite. Nice full calm grips, but what good is that if they come off with a direct look or distraction? We used a diff decoy a couple months ago and got great reactions from her with him. He put allot of pressure, I thought she would not take it. She did the bark and hold like a champ and took as much sleeve as could fit in her mouth. Only thing is, she is so slow, any decoy could outrun her in the flee. Also she gets sticky on the outs when she is tired.

Yeah,I like a dog that can move and run and jump and climb ladders. Are you thinking that it's the angulation that caused the arthritis? because I'm not sure that makes sense from a medical point of view. Is this common with the showline dogs? I agree about the x-rays at her age but how can the vet diagnose for sure it its arthritis? I could see how too much angulation could cause cartilage . I found a list of many of the German terms www.eastgermanshepherd.com/german.html

Thanks animules. It's more her back than the rear angulation gsdlvr2. Who I bought her from treated her very badly. She had no muscle and was severly underweight when she arrived here in March. Now that I have her jogging a mile or 2 a day, she seems to have the blood flowing and is less stiff. Her biggest problem when she got here was just lack of movement. Even if I throw her outside she will only lay in the same spot rather than walk and sniff around. Never seen a dog act like her.
