I heard that you can use EPT test on dogs to determine if they are pregnant, they just have to be at least 3 weeks along before you can test them. Has anybody tried this before? If yes, were the results accurate. Interested in hearing anyones thought. Mysti

Mysti, many years ago I heard the same thing, but have never tried it. It makes sense that it would work, if one does not mind having a wet shoe. About the three (3) weeks issue-I cannot say. We know that the ratio of progesterone to blood mass changes throughout the heat cycle into the various stages of the pregnancy, and essentally the test works by verifying the level of this hormone. I would like to hear input as well, from those (with a wet shoe) who have tried it and found it to be successful. The "wet shoe" is a joke guys! Bob-O

are we talking about the "human" EPT? Doesn't that test for HUMAN choriongonadotropin (HCG)? There are pregnancy tests out there for dogs but they test for the hormone relaxin in the blood. I believe the company is Synbiotic. If I am in error or there is something new out there, please let me know thanks

My vet has told me that human EPTs will not work with dogs. Stephen

The test will always come back negative, whether the dog is pregnant or not. Not ONCE will the test come back positive.

Stephen, thanks for clearing up a myth. Although it makes elementary sense that a human EPT might work, I never tried it and personally knew no one who did. But, I had heard the rumours, and one would think that most mammals are similar in body function for it to work. Aside from blood hormone level testing (still iffy in the early stages) and ultrasound after several weeks, I don't know of anything that works other than the passing of time. Perhaps the test referred to by Charity is something that works. Bob-O
