A quick one from me! Each time we travel to Scottish shows we take little bets to see who will be stewarding at each club. Many times it is ageing scots who appear at several clubs. WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE? Ands why is it only in scotland that we see the 'little hitler' judging style? Its soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo obvius that its the people they know and fear least that they chase after. Should scottish clubs not be encuraging others in to steward? Are no aspiring judges clocking up there stewarding experience so they can get to higher status?

should read 'little hitler' stewarding style (all that pointing and running across rings)

The reason they have older stewards in Scotland is because they live longer. Must be the fresh air or the money England gives to them. Please give Scotland their Independence and wales aswell.

Well! Well! Well. Dear Froggy,First of all, how much stewarding have you done? Or are you past your sell by date. Secondly I have spent a fortune at the hairdressers getting my hair dyed blonde.I will admit my hair is grey, so it has been a waste of money trying to make myself look younger, not older?. I have stewarded in Scotland,England,Ireland, by invitation from the Clubs, both open and champ. Usually at no expense to the club(other than lunch} and that includes Ireland 2 day show.I paid my share of petrol, ferry, board and meals. How many exhibitors would do that and not show their dogs. I have been invited by judges to steward for them. I have stewarded several times at S.K.C.,as I was invited by the late John Young, as the G.S.D.exhibitors are usually hounded at this show, and he wanted someone who knew the G.S.D.exhibitors. I have allways tried to be polite and sometimes humerous in the ring and still do my job properly. I do not run about the ring (heart would not permit) pointing at people. If a KC rep. was at a show and I knew someone was being watched,I would quietly go up to the handler and tell them, trying not to be obvious. Do you not realise Froggy. that the biggest majority of clubs find it difficult to get stewards, good stewards at that, especially for champ. shows. My son and I were taught by Jessie Mowbray. in those days there were a lot of dogs in all the classes, not like now, when you are lucky if you have 8 in a class. All entries are down at the shows,so it makes stewarding a lot easier nowadays. We are now getting aspiring judges to steward, because they need to have 12 stewarding appointments.BUT will they continue to steward after they have fullfilled their criteria. So maybe the clubs will need the ageing steward. Or am I like the man with the big nose, taking this to myself. By the way Froggy. I would be most interested to speak to you at a show. I may not be stewarding as I do like to spectate as well. So if you could make yourself known to me,we could converse. (I will sign my name at the end of this message.) Hopefully you will recognise me, I am the wee auld slightly plump wifie with the dyed blonde hair, gold rimmed specs, also with a gold filling in my false teeth.lol. Irene Foster

to 007 As one of the ageing stewards(Ipresume)I pay income tax as I work (over the age of 60),that is why I can afford to steward for free.I assume a lot of my tax goes into English coffers.

007 mmmmmmmm now there's an idea we could keep all the revenue's that come in from our oil'whiskey beef and gas then we could sell our water gas and oil to the english at over inflated prices mmmmm maybe thats why we are not independant FREEDOM lol

by froggy on 06 September 2006 - 20:09

MMmm. Too much information really. Not sure I'll need to check stewards teeth to find you. Congratulations on your stewarding record. I've done a fair bit of stewarding thanks. And am not quite at my sellby date yet. There was a little murmur around the ring at the Scottish kennel Club show that one of the stewards hoped to judge it soon. Do you think thats why exhibitors had an easier time than usual at this show? There certanly seemed to be less of the little hitlerisms this time. I hear however it wont transpire until the breed council exam is passed. Since you would not run around the ring pointing and shouting etc, but would go to handler/ owner and speak quietly to them I think maybe then the steward Im meaning has no gold tooth. LOL.

As a Secretary of a German Shepherd Dog Club that has been registered since 1926 I am not only appualed but totally disgusted by the remarks made by the village idiots on this forum. Clubs need people who KNOW the rules and regualtions for running shows because the people showing are totally dyslexic. They sign a contract - that is what the entry schedule is - with the club and Kennel Club that they will abide by the rules and Guess what when they are told that they don't then they give all the childish answers they can summon up. 'It's not my dog' 'The judge is blind & which idiot picked him?' The remarks go on becuase they are kennel blind have no idea on rules don't give a dam about the club they are causing havoc at. Then because they have not got what they think they should have the all mighty red one they will call any one - in the case the stewards. To steward is the most thankless job. You need nerves of steel a keen eye and that is before you enter the ring. You must not been seen to speak to the judge as you will be accused of judging. You have to be seen to be on the ball as it was the stewards fault that your dog was in last place again! May be in this case nobody will ask these idiots to steward mainly they are know as not being able to read and write. The Kennel Club should make the rule that before anybody starts to judge they should first have stewarded at a minimum of 10 shows, by then they should have learnt some of the rules of showing. I have stewarded at over 35 shows and have learnt more from this than anything else, and these have been at different club's both north & south of the border. I have been proud to steward although you get nothing for it, and I have stewarded for all breeds of dogs and have been stewarding along side of SV Judges. I have also been asked to steward at the Scottish 2 day show and am under 60 and I can and will be hard on the exhibitors - you have after all agreed to abide by KC rules. Flaut the rules pay the price. It is nice to see how each judge approaches their shows and how they arrive at their placings. Perhaps if these morons became a member of a club and joined in then they would learn something. Instead of being the half witts they appear on here. Or does none of this matter so long as they get just what they want and not what they deserve. Just walk away and leave the club show in tatters. If any one of you had run just 1 show you would have some idea just how hard it is and would be just a little more appreciative when you do exhibit. Does it matter who is stewarding it is the Judges opinion that you have entered for in the first place - unless of course it is your friend! That is is a whole new ball game then. I don't see anyone complaining in the obediance side of the English show scene that the same club's have used the same stay steward's. To get a good steward is pricless and you hang on to them if you have any sense what so ever - but you lot would not know this as you don't run a club. To miss quote JFK - 'Think not what my breed can do for me but what can I do for my breed.' Perhaps if you ran your lives with this rule you may be a little less sour. Carol Morrison - Secretary BOLTON GSD Club.
