Mithuna

Here is a pic update of my 11 and 1/2 month old GSD girl ( whom we are keeping at 70 lbs for now...don't like the dry ribby look, dont like over weight either.....she's on 2 lbs Performance Dog Raw /day   ). She works enthusiastically to satisfy her desire to get ball and the tug while indoors, but on the field shes is curious about sights and the many scents left on the grass; trying to develop a bit of focus with her, while outdoors. There she is in Prospect Park earlier tonite:

Call me crazy but whenever I go to a training field if possible and safe I let my dog off leash to follow any scent it wants, not long it comes back ready to work. I otherwise do this on leash and just follow the dog around. Dogs are curious, it is survival instinct.

Most others see this as a huge affront to their "leadership" and correct the dog heavily for such behaviour, go figure.

Nice looking dog.

Thanks for sharing your view VK; very much appreciated.

Mithuna, why not put that nose to work and start her on scent boxes, too?

Focus work is never really done, either...and it's as important to build it in short bursts, reward immediately when you get it, and then release her just as quickly. Once she reliably gives it to you when asked, then you can start stretching out how long she has to sustain it.

She looks good--not pudgy, not ribby, but nicely in-between. Good job.

vk4gsd, since you asked, I'll gladly help you out: you're crazy--even though it's not really germain to the discussion... but off-lead in a park in NY City is NOT a good idea under most circumstances, on most days of the week especially when you've got a strong girl dog who has already demonstrated that she's willing to snag someone she perceives as threatening faster than Mithuna can necessarily circumvent that notion when it begins to form in her mind. Far too many hungry attorneys in the big city, eager to take a personal injury case, and if it involves a dog bite, it's a bonus paycheck these days.

Kind of hard to get her to stay still in a stacked position. And Hexe yes, I wont be letting her off lead in NYC ...she just has that way about her that lets you know its not such a good idea. Even when she gets a chance to play with other dogs she puts her foot on top of them and tries to press them onto the ground. What is she trying to communicate?
