I know that it can be hereditary but what else can cause this problem?

Many things in addition to or by themselves can cause ears not to come up. People or children pulling or mauling the ears when they are young. Poor diet. Other dogs biting the ears. Sometimes I have even seen crates cause the ears to be weak if the dog is kept in a crate most of the time and his ears are bent when sitting or standing. That's just a few instances.

Genetics as well

Genetics play a large part in the soft ear problem. However, as DJC said above, there can be instances of pther dogs pulling or biting the ears, being in a crate that is too small for much of the time, ear infections, and sometimes a very large male might simply take longer for the ears to come up and stay up properly. But genetics plays a huge part in soft ear issues.

With my female I definitely think my older male affected her ears comming up. When they would play he was constantly mouthing her ears. The breeder said I should keep them separated, but in a home environment when your dogs are always around you, I felt guilty locking one up. I ended up having to tape them for a few months, and they eventually stood.

Also......submissive puppies have a problem with ears. They tend to fold them and pull them back to the sides of their head. During "teething" this can be harmful for the ears. They tend to crease and have a hard time coming up. Sometimes...you just need to tape them to be safe.

its Genetics for the most part, watch programs of wolves they tug and pull on ears as much as shepherd pups. weak ears come more in certain lines, other lines have few problems. if there is potential for weak ears then the problems can occur with being kept in crates, also kept where they have little attention. puppies with the tendency need to be where they can watch life , not in a crate or kept too long inside.
