When using an outside stud how many ties are usually offered by the stud owner?

wow that sound funny...well you know what I mean.

I'm sure everyone has their different opinions and ways of doing "business" - but when I have a female here breeding to my stud dog, she is bred on the first day she stands/he is interested, then every other day until she is no longer standing/he is no longer interested. No limit on number of ties - it is in the stud dog owners' best interest to make sure the female is "covered" throughout her peak cycle. molly

Same here. If we keep the female, she is bred every other day, until she refuses. If the female owner brings her over, it is up to the owner how many times he/she wants to come. In Germany, if you go to males which are high in demand, you get one time and that is it. Chris

It is absolutely true what Molly is saying...that is the proper way of doing business...but in the real world sometimes the owner of the female wants to be with the female and in this case sometimes you can only make 1 tie...the last mating that my stud had was just this way...actually the female was just about out of cycle and it took a long time for them to decide to mate...one mating is all that is needed as long as the female's eggs a fertilized...but your never sure so the best way is just what Molly has said... ~Bob~

When I take dogs back to Germany they usually ask me to come back as many times as I want until the female refuses. I normally do 2 ties, about 36 hours apart. Stephen

I do the same as those above...as many breedings as the owner and female want, for as long as the bitch is willing. I sympathize with the bitch's owner, realizing sometimes much time, money, heart and soul is invested in a future litter, and I want to do all I can to insure it happens. I also don't charge extra for boarding or rides to and from the airport like I have heard of some stud owners doing. After all, Hawk likes it when the ladies visit him!!

Just out of curiosity, have anybody ever request to take a semen check to see if theirs any live sperm? Or do you stud dog owner’s automatic do this for the sake of a guarantee that the bitch will become preggers? LOL Kandi! I bet Hawk likes the ladies coming by :grins: I just had to giggle that part :D

as a female owner as well as a stud dog owner, when looking at stud dogs for my girls, I would only request a semen check if the stud dog has not sired a very recent litter, or if there is not a female currently confirmed pregnant by him. Young puppies or pregnant female is enough semen evaluation for me - if nothing recent or current by him, then I would request a semen check before I would send a female to him. My own stud dog has sired recent litters, he is also collected regularly for freezing - so his semen is routinely checked. molly

Just prior to the first time my stud dog was used for the first time, I had him checked by a repro specialist just to be sure. As a courtesy this vet does it automatically when he is collected. Molly makes perfect sense. I would check sperm count and mobility if it has been a while since the dog has sired a litter, especially if he is getting on in age. Otherwise it is probably safe to assume all is well. When utilizing a stud dog,I think you have to think along the same lines as you do when you buy a puppy. It is the integrity of the person you are dealing with that is just as important as the dog itself. If the stud owner has a reputation for being honest and fair, there is no need to worry so much about such things.. I don't care how great a stud dog is, if he is owned or managed by someone that doesn't sit well with me, I would never use him.
