Will someone please explain why Ursus free, or Mink free, or Fero free lines are preferrable? Thank you.

It's not that they are always preferable. For some people, they just don't like those lines for one or more reasons. Others prefer to have them. Those dogs that you mentioned are/were very frequently used. Sometimes it's hard to find a pedigree that doesn't include them. Jeff

Simple, This gives us an alternative gene pool to add to our breeding program. Deversity in gene pool is necessary to improve our breed. If we keep breeding to dog of similar gene pool we will make the gene pool homozogous dominant leading to set phenotypes and we will also make certain defects and diseases dominant in the breed. This is why we should not breed dysplatic dogs. In order to improve the breed we have to have alternative genes to add to our gene pool. One way of doing this is to selectively breed to dogs of a different line. Mutts in general are more fertile and health because nature make sure the gene pool remain heterozygous.
