For me I am very happy for those people who can afford to buy the best available stock in Germany. It just only means GSD is very alive and kicking. They help improve the GSD outside Germany.

parako writes: small breeders can breed as good as big/famous breeders but with his unpopular kennel name not to mention lack connection to the judges it is impossible for their breeding to reach up top places. You are lucky to meet these breeders, you can have a good dog with cheaper price to play at your own country. **************************************************** True statement. Most people ask for "the best Kennel", where they can get a puppy. Shows how little they REALLY know. Von Batu and Von der Hohen Eiche both German, use the same studs, have the same quality of dogs and are both honest. People(outside Germany) will pay 4-6 times as much for a Von Batu puppy, and be PROUD that they did. No difference in the pups, AT ALL. I can use the same stud, and I have a Von Batu female in my kennel, but do you think someone wants a pup from "Von Haus Henry"(which they have NEVER heard of) over a "Von Batu" puppy? No way in Hell. I take that same Von Batu, female back to Germany, and breed with the same studs that Von Batu does. Some(because I am a small hobbiest operation) would probably through their ignorance label me a "backyard breeder"(that is the "in vogue" term nowadays) Although people feign knowlege, they do not seem to get that the, "Von Wherever/Whoever", is just where the pup was born, who was the breeder, the geographical spot where the mother gave birth to the puppy. They place much more emphasis on the "Von _____", than is warranted. I find that people are requesting "pink papers" and "kennel names", over researching the actual dog that they are about to purchase, somehow the actual dog has gotten place on the back burner. Strange priorities.........strange, indeed. Whether it is a big name breeder or a hobbiest such as myself, the percentages of good dogs over those with flaws will be the same. The big name kennel that boast the greatest dogs, will not tell you of the many incidents of hip dysplasia they have, long haired coats(they rename them "plush" and give you a BS definition of long-haired dogs), soft ears, pancreas problems, ect. They will line up the plaques and trophies of those champions, but not tell you of the bad hip x-rays that they did not submit for a rating, because they knew they would not pass muster. Regardless of who you get a puppy from, you should make sure that they are breeding to the SV standards, and understand even after that, there are no guarentee that the puppy will be "perfect"(no dog is) AND in Germany there is no warranty to accompany that, "no guarentee" either. And a whole other subject are these inflated prices for these puppies. And consumers, YOU are responsible for these usreasonable prices that some of you are paying for these puppies! You and You ALONE! Stephen Stephen

Very well said Stephen. Thats the naked truth and everybody should know it. Not every dog born at Batu or Farbenspeil or big xyz kennel is a good dog. Just that one good dog, even repeat litter for Yasko combination came up with Solo who couldnt make a VA. Chances, contacts and of course hanging in there for a longer period of time matters. Good puppies are everywhere in the world, but they perhaps might never be able to get the top slots.

Sumo, There are excellent "big-name" and "no-name" kennels in Germany and other countries. All produce excellent, good, fair, poor, and terrible examples of the breed. Yes, a "von Whoever" can be a tremendous selling point for puppies, especially if the name is connected to several VA dogs/bitches. And yes, those "big-name" kennels do incur a more favourable place with the judges. Purebred dogs, horses, whatever; the politics of the judging are always present. Look around your own country-there should be plently of excellent examples of puppies from pure German stock with a BSZS VA-1 to VA-10 as a father, mother, or grandparent, etc. These puppies tend to be no better or worse than the German-born puppies. If you must have pink papers, then it is best to buy from Germany. The above statement by Jantie that approximately 20,000 puppies are S.V.-registered each year should make an impression, if only this: From that number of 20,000 only about twenty (20) will be chosen as VA grade, so you have a very easy numerical factor of 1:1,000 chance that any puppy will ever make the VA grade. Add the dogs from other countries, and these odds become worse. The only way that I would purchase a puppy from Germany would be to go (and spend much time) with a breeder or breeders and try to establish at least an elementary relationship. This is of course, expensive and prohibitive for most of us. Or, establish at least the same relationship with an area breeder that I knew I could trust who has this level of rapport with some German breeders. Whatever choice you make, it is for the dog's entire lifetime and a good bit of your's. Choose well and good luck. Bob-O

I've also heard buying from the "wrong" breeder in Germany and/or using the "wrong" broker can result in difficulties selling the puppies in the future.

Keep in mind... even though the German breeder will not sell you his pick puppy.... no one knows the REAL out come of a litter as they mature. Sometimes the "pick" does not turn out to be the best. Yes, you take a chance but the odds are just slightly under even that the puppy you import will be just as good as his brother or sister. But, even having said that, Those of us who buy for breeding purposes down the road, still have the same blood as their famous litter mates.

Hi Sumo. I'm lucky to say that I've got an absolutely good and at the same time honest small breeder in Germany to whom I have alot of faith in. I myself have got 2 fantastic dogs from him, one is not even from his kennel but was recommened by him, and I am totally happy with my dogs. He is honest enough to tell me that the ones that I liked in the litter would not be as good as the ones that he would choose, and he was always right. At the moment he's expecting puppis from Tor di Casa Nobili (BSZS 05 SG7/owner K-H Zygato) and Alexa vom Regina Pacis(full-sister of Atrice BSZS 05 VA10)!!! Also a top chance to get a top dog. If you want to contact him his e-mail is; Peterdehmelt@aol.com He lives in Germany and is a top handler and has a very good eye for top dogs. Try him out! You won't be disapointed.
