My friend has a 17 week old gsd puppy who has been diagnosed with a herniated stomach. He has been throwing up his food(since 5 or 6 weeks) even after smaller portions, elevation of food.He is also very thin.. He is being operated on tomorrow and my friend and his wife are very concerned about him. They are life long gsd lovers(owners) and hope for the best. Thus there willingness to do the operation. They took this puppy on because the breeder didn't want to keep him after they heard he was not keeping his food down. What are the little pups chances? Any opinions greatly appreciated ..keep the little guy in your thoughts too.

I can't help you with advice, I'm not a vet, but I can relate to the problem. I wish the pup and it's owners the best. I feel very sorry for them. Keep us informed. I hope the little guy makes it.

I have never heard of a herniated stomach... the symptoms you describe sound like mega-esophagus or PRAA but I can't be sure since I am not a vet either but I have had numerous megaesophagus pups..... The persistent right aortic arch (PRAA) can sometimes be surgically corrected if I remember correctly.. at any rate, I do wish them luck and will say a prayer for little puppy baby.... Do keep us informed

The puppy is returning from surgery today and the surgery appears to have gone well. It seems the condition he has(had) is very rare.. I will give you more details when I find out more about what exactly the condition is...thanks for everyone who replied and there concern.

giebel, did your friend get any health certifcation from the breeder? If so then your friend should get her money back, or half. Responsible breeders will give you a health contract for a year or 2.
