Please forgive me for even bringing this question to the board. First you must remember I did this to myself but I know I can remedy (fix) it with someones suggestions out there. I know I can not be the only person that this has happened to. And it is not a training or even intellegent question - so here goes--------- My GSD is 2 years old - wonderful- wonderful- smart- smart - we have a beautiful fenced in yard that we train and play in - but I can not get him to poop in his own yard - he will pee - I always have to take him to a field across the way.........I did it to my self because I allowed this behavior - because he runs in the early am with me and does his business while we run - any suggestions - please Funk man don't hurt me with your answer!

well this is an easy fix. he will eventually poop in his yard if you stop taking him out to the pasture. It might take him a couple days to do so, but he will reward him greatly when he does then take him out on the run in the big pasture. Remember he doesn't get to go out and about until he goes in his own yard. good luck Heather

Probably the easiest way to remedy this is to use the 'matchstick trick'...an old favorite of showring and obedience handlers who don't want their charges fouling the ring. Pretty basic: 1. Obtain a book of paper matches. 2. Tear out one of the paper matches from the book, and moisten the head of the match to inactivate the sulphur. (The old-timers that taught me this trick used to just pop the matchhead in their mouth and wet it with their saliva, but you can use water if you'd prefer). 3. With the dog on-lead, insert the paper match into the dog's rectum, sulpher-end first, about three-quarters the length of the match. 4. Walk the dog around your yard until he accomplishes what you're seeking--at which time you ought to reinforce his actions with quiet but sincere praise. 5. Repeat as necessary until dog has caught on that it's OK to use his own yard for this function. Shouldn't take him long to figure this out. :^) Obviously, there's no point in doing this if you know the dog has already defecated... This little trick works by virtue of triggering the sphincter muscles to expel the foreign object in the rectum, and once these muscles are triggered, any waste material within the colon will be expelled as well. IMPORTANT NOTE: Use PAPER matches only, *not* wooden ones. This is very important--wooden ones will cause injury to the dog.

Yikes.........lol. I'm not sure I would want someone sticking matches up my ass paper or otherwise.Might want to recover some of your dog's ah...how should I say this?... fecal matter from the field and place it in your yard where you wish he would do his thing.I would be suprised if did not work. Sounds like you have a clean dog,you sure you want to fix this problem? I wish I could get the dogs we have to go in a field somewhere...I'm assuming you do not have to clean up after him? Good luck

Thank you all for the help in this matter - I am going to try Charlie's idea. I do not think I am talented enough to do Hexe's thing - I would never want him to suffer because of my stupidity............although Hexe I do appreciate your input.

The same can be accomplished a bit safer with a baby suppository. I have a friend that does this with his puppies from 12 weeks on. As soon as they are introduced to a leash and collar, he will walk them to an area of his property where he wants them to poop and insert the suppository and give them a command (such as Go or Poop or Shit or whatever you like) When the pup has done this he then will give lots of praise and a treat. As funny and bizarre as it sounds it does work. It sure beats the heck out of hunting around your yard for the land mines, and does make an impression when you’re out and about and your dog will crap on command....lol

Frankly guys I think I must be dreaming!!!!

Andrew wrote: "The same can be accomplished a bit safer with a baby suppository." Absolutely! That's the basic idea, after all--though I'll argue the 'safer' claim, since there's no damage to be done by using a paper matchstick that's had the sulphur moistened, either. The reason paper matches are commonly used is simply because they're easily obtained, convenient to carry in one's pocket or the glovebox of one's car, and can have other uses aside from encouraging one's pooch to poop. ;^) Plus, few people will look at you oddly if they find a book of matches in your coat. Not so likely if they find an infant suppository. :^) Renz, Charlie's suggestion *might* work, but I wouldn't count on it...once a dog establishes its elimination habits, the mere presence of its own waste usually isn't enough to foster a change--though it may cause him some anxiety. Give it a shot, though, and if it doesn't work, try the suppository or the matchstick--I have faith in your ability to slip a small item into the dog's bum without a disaster ensuing.

Hexe, Thank you so much for the vote of confidence - I only wish you were her to do it for me. It really is a pain for me because I run with him in the am and then get home from work and potty him and train with him - then after dinner instead of turning him out to the fenced in yard to go - I have to dress to go across the road - and really there are bigger issues people are facing but when it is 40 below and you have already ran in the morning (what I whiner I am ) not really!- anyway I will try - I knew if I asked I would get seasoned people to tell me how to reverse it........ I had 4 GSD's that I trained to go in one spot but failed to do it with him -
