@bladgee, I'm not saying that the gsd is be all end all...save your high horse " sheltered life" comment for where it's appropriate.
The issue here, is that the gsd is being replaced because of it's APPEARANCE, not because other breeds are superior, or that it does not perform it's job extraordinarily well.....can you not understand how wrong it is to replace a working dog because of it's ears!
Next thing, the people causing the need for detection dogs in the first place, will complain about dogs being in the same building with them and since it's their religion, dogs will be banned from airports and then the ones who are working at sneaking bom bs into the airports will win because of this political correctness......that if one is OFFENDED, then what ever offends them must be eliminated....THAT is where all this is heading!

It has nothing. To do. with the gsd being the be all end all, nor which breed is better than the other...it has to do with the destruction of our civilization because of political correctness!!!!!!

Joan if I may call you that . If you read my post iv have stated in many of them I think it is wrong to let can any members of the public decide witch animal should be used in any roll of there job . But not because it's had pointy ear's imo it's because the dogs can do there job . Actually what I'm saying is not Miles away from what u are saying and Duke . I just think if this has to be changed well there is many other suitable breeds to do this job . many races come through airport with different back grounds and different feers and a little compassion I'd not a bad thing . Dogs will never be put aside as there is nothing else that can do there job so efficient and cheep .

bladeedge, every good pointy eared dog can be sold ten times each month, do you really think TSA will have an impact on worldwide demand,

I actually have more countries/clients that want only GSD or only malinois, and guess what, the only GSD contracts are easyest to fill normally, the only malis a bit harder, and TSA, only floppy, impossibleWink Smile

Duke you obviously know better than me I honestly couldn't tell you I'm not a major seller of dogs . I'm looking to take this off point and am certainty not looking to offend anyone

Bladgee...dogs will never be put aside?
Really? And who would have thought our borders would ever be " put aside" ? That is one of the reasons sniffer dogs are needed...no borders anymore...so dogs are very small compared to people demanding entry without hinderence into our countries...

by duke1965 on 29 December 2018 - 17:12

not offended at all, just try to give correct info on the topic, for me it is all about getting the right dog to get the job done,

here is a video of a real good detector dog with floppy ears,

I had several clients refusing for looks as well, as its a staff/malinois mix, England wanted him but couldnot, TSA supplier said they wouldnot, so he went to USA police unit who cared about getting the job doneWink Smile

joan, dogs will not be put aside, even when border will be enforced, off topic, cant believe there are Americans that are opposing a stronger border

the new cargo screening contracts will provide thousands of new jobs for dogs nationwide, and worldwide demand is still growing

This is pretty dumb on TSAs part but then again it is TSA so doesn't surprise me in the least. Isn't there a large percentage of TSA dogs that screen cargo out of sight of the general public? If they are so concerned with the public being afraid of pointy eared dogs then can't they limit them to just screening cargo and planes, but not people?

All of the people I have worked with training in narcotics detection prefer GSDs, and these are not all GSD people by any means. The common issue I hear about the labs, retrievers, and spaniels is that they are ON AVERAGE not as serious or focused as the GSD and often take longer to mature mentally.

I agree that it wouldn't be a bad thing for the GSD to lose popularity with the public but by doing this the TSA will lower the demand for them as an actual working dog. TSA has a huge demand for detection dogs, probably more than any other organization in the US. By cutting out the GSD this will mean less breeders looking to breed dogs for actual working abilities. Probably won't do anything to hurt the need for sport or pet dogs. I wouldn't be surprised if more agencies follow suit even if this turns out to be a disaster. Isn't political correctness just great?

. England and Ireland will only take soft ear dogs for detection no matter how good the dogs are and yes it was introduced to make people more at ease when dogs come up to them . They have pointy ear dogs for other work

can be bladeedge, I sold multiple dogs to great britain for LE this year and none of them had floppy ears
