Hi

Can please experienced breeders give an opinion on this hip x-ray? A friend of mine is considering a pup out of this female.

Thanks

Well it looks worse than it is as the knees need to rotated in. Is the dog HD rated?

I see that the left side seems a bit loose, right side is nice and tight, what does everyone else see?

How old is the pup?

She is 5 yo. The x-ray's were taken at 12 month of age in Europe.

It is too bad her elbows were not xrayed and certified also, though that is only a recent development and requirement in Germany.  Not a routine practice four years ago, so that is why older dogs aren't certified in the elbows.  Are the sire's elbows and hips certified?  Elbow dysplasia is as much of a problem as hip dysplasia, though some believe that elbow dysplasia is 100% environmental and nutritional, not genetic.  I'm on the fence with about that myself, but I guarantee against it for 3 years for a full refund, as the theory of it not being genetic is not proven.

if those x rays were taken at 12 months she should probably get them done again

Does the dog have an original certification?  OFA, SV?  If not, why not, when she is being bred?

Jeremy, dog's joints take a beating just as ours do as they age.  It is normal for wear and tear to happen to them over time.   She should not be re-xrayed at five years if the original certification is valid.  That said...I had both of my males xrayed in elbows, back and hips at six years of age...the xrays were like a young dogs.

Thank goodness I don't have to pass elbow and hip evaluation...I wouldn't make it!

She was officially certified at 1 yo in Europe, but I don't know the rating. All I know one of her litter sisters is FCI (C) hips.

If you are considering getting a pup from this female shouldn't you find out what her hip's rating is?  As far as I can tell, the positioning is not good - the knees are turned out, one leg is turned different than the other.  The right hip (left in the picture) appears to be too loose/lax in the socket, and appears to have no femoral neck.  Probably the positioning.  The other hip appears to be seated correctly, but the femoral head is not as round, and doesn't look smooth.  Could be the positioning.  If it isn't the positioning, then I would say nope, the hips don't look so good.   Not good enough to breed anyway.
