I have this handsome, believed to be/best guess a Malinois/Ridgeback mix that needs a forever home. He is currently with a rescue, but they haven't gotten much in terms of interest for him and the few that have, the second they hear of his energy, they disappear. He is a great dog, healthy, incredibly loving, just needing a strong/structured home, afterall, that is what both of those breeds require!
He was adopted as a puppy through the rescue but by 7.5 months, they returned him, complaining they couldn't handle him and were gone too much for him. They also left a young pup, let alone a Mal!, have free reign, in the backyard for 10-12 hours a day and wondered why the dog was so much energy and out of control! He turned 1 earlier this month. He is now crate trained and loves his crate (honestly, you grab a treat and he runs in there. You watch tv, he goes in there. He gets in trouble, he hides in there. and he only is in there overnight and when we leave the house). He sleeps in the crate, by his own choice now - we've tried to let him sleep with us at night but he now prefers the crate and he gets antsy in the night, so eventually goes back in. He knows his obedience commands, just a matter now of building duration. The only thing he doesn't have down is leash manners - ie not pulling! Seriously, he is strong - have a pic of me walking 3 saints bernards, my mal girl and a lab mix (a combined 500 lbs) and yet they didn't pull me. But this one dog does! Its his only con and having 3 other dogs in house, its hard to take just one out with leash and treats to work on him. He sits and waits for his food, he loves his fruits and veggies (he is a chow hound though). He has a ton of energy, but honestly in the 5 months I've had him, he has calm down alot for me (not so much with my stepdad, but when it comes to all dogs in this house, i'm the Alpha they listen to).  He really just needs a strong leader and someone who can let out his energy. He makes a great running buddy, that's for sure, especially long distance! If not a long distance runner, I'd recommend him for sports, as he would be great at it. He loves to run and jump (and hop even), so agility would be awesome (and I've already introduced him to tunnel and he loves it), but he also loves balls and frisbee so disc or flyball would be great. Even Rally-O would be great as he loves people pleasing and that structure would work for him! He would greatly benefit from being sported/worked. He gets along great with other dogs, obviously avoiding smaller dogs, only due to his size and obliviousness when he moves around (honestly, he just plops his butt anywhere! He has been known to sit on my dogs faces even!) and when he plays he may get alittle rough in play for smaller dogs. Young jack russels may be the exception to this though! :)

I would love to keep him, having my own mini Mal (she's thought to be a Malinois/Border Collie mix, so she's half his size), but I already have 2 girls right now, and financially that's all I can afford, plus when I add my third dog, I want a greater age difference - mine are currently 4.5 and 2 years old. I want a wee bit more space in age in there. Plus we are trying to move and its been hard enough to find a place that will accept 3 dogs. We have found a place to move and its alot smaller yard than where we are living now, so its time we may have to give him back to the rescue, who doesn't have another foster home that can handle Charlie, and will put him in daycare/boarding. While he would love the daycare element, he wouldn't get the structure needed and wouldn't be happy there, and its been 5 months as is, and only has had 1 person to even see him, who knows how long he'd be in there! So I'm really trying to avoid this from happening. I will probably see if landlord will let us finish out our foster time with this guy, but its definitely not an ideal place for him to hang either.

If you have any interest in this guy, please contact me about him! Also, open to other fosters that can handle such a situation (high energy dog and has a good yard space) - rescue provides food and pays for health if necessary (obviously fosters need to be somewhat local to Orange County).

An unusual cross, and a very nice looking and sounding dog.
I do hope you can find him the good home he needs.
(I can't offer, I'm not even in the US).  Thanks for taking so
much trouble to get him 'livable with';  and the very best of
luck in seeking a new owner for him who will be as good at
caring for him as you clearly are.

I won't say what I think of the people who originally had him !

Classis pit mix, seriously doubt the mal, ridge back theory. More like a dozen lab/pit mixed i know. Even has the face marking. Reverse masking. Energy level sounds right for lab/pit.
Best of luck finding him a home no matter what he is.
He's a good looking dog.

@Dragonfry, he definitely isn't a lab/pit mix- but to be fair, i can slightly see how you suspect that based on the pics available.  He is definitely a shepherd mix, his markings are just different compared to his siblings and the rescue did have the mother, which was a shepherd and did have the proper mask. There is no pit in any of the others, nor has anyone ever even suggested the pit possibility. His energy and mannerisms are directly inline with my Malinois/Border Collie mix for that age he is just twice her size and short hair.  He doesn't have the build or manners of a GSD neither (i have one of them too- I have a GSD mix, a pit mix and a mal mix). But it is definitely shepherd mix that much the rescue does know. The last people's vet thought it was a Shepherd/Great Dane mix, but he doesn't seem like it much either. He is 80 lbs, 25" tall, lean build and perfectly square. I also work with a Ridgeback rescue group and my coordinator did agree its a possibility of him having some RR in him.

@Hundhunter... I've definitely had plenty of those thoughts about the last owner... especially the first couple of weeks while I was going insane trying to get him to settle down!

Whatever he is though for sure, he is a sweet, protective, loyal baby I wish I could keep for myself and if only people had the patience and open mind to take on such a dog... Had I given up on my girl when I first got her due to the insane energy, I never would have had the dogs I have, never would have gotten into agility, never would have helped out other special high energy dogs, and never would have gone in the direction of career as I am, which is inspired because of the two girls combined. :)
