Bebo, out of curiosity what is the name of that dog that competed so well at the highest level?
My other shepherd dog did not respond well to the treatments, he never weighed more than 55 pounds all is adult life, I had to be put down when he went down to 40 pounds and did not improve. I spent a lot of time on the EPI forums where there are plenty of success stories to be found, but I have also learned that the variations of what works and does not work for the individual dogs is enormous.

If we know the genetics, how is this disease suddenly cropping up in breeds that previously had no history of it? jackie harris

@rks:
i'll check with the owner but at this point it's not my prerogative to tell. what i can tell you is that the dog was managed with the help of dr. kai bessmann, tierklinik hofheim, as the primary, go-to vet. i also wouldn't be too surprised if matthias knows (of) the dog.

as i said earlier, i'm not the one to jump on an EPI dog voluntarily, i know there are huge variations, and the outcome is far from guaranteed. there are enough risks along the (ipo) way that starting out in hole is pretty pointless. unless the pup just totally blew us away and then some, i'd try and find him a comfy, loving, knowledgable, and low-stress home. having said that, if i had one with a not too over the top TLI assay that's a potential ipo barn-raiser and otherwise healthy, i'd give it shot. no doubt. right off the bat, i'd try and get with dr. steiner at TAMU. i'd also try a hail mary and contact dr herthel et al. at alamo pintado. they are not only rather innovative and skilled vets (mostly equine, though), they also may just have enough self-serving interest due to their platinum performance line of supplements, that they might be motivated enough to work with you on seeing one through on their supplements.

Bebo, thanks much for the info, are you a breeder?

I've read that there is a juvenile form of EPI that resolves itself as the dog matures. It's complicated. The EPI effected  dogs I am familiar with  were GSL's, not sure if they were all related or not. One of them,a relatively young dog,  recently died from torsion.
