Looking for a new home for this 5 month old imported puppy. I hoped that he would be a Schutzhund dog, but he recently was diagnosed with EPI. I just lost a dog to EPI and I just cannot go through this again. If there is a dedicated person out there that can help, is familiar with EPI. Kody is very active, smart and good looking.

What a shame! VERY nice pedigree on this boy: Tiekerhook, Karthago, Busecker Schloss. Troll v. Haus Melinda, etc.

I know of a dog with epi that recently passed away at age 13 (shiloh shepherd, which mainly come from GSD lines.)  It can be managed very well, if you have the right resources.

Makes you wonder where this comes from, doesn't it? Our EPI girl is doing very well with some special care for her food, a monthly B12 shot, her enzymes she back up to 73 pounds. We call her our 'supermodel', she is absolutely gorgeous even if on the thin side! She IS crazy, tho', with a level of aggression that is formidable, NOT for an inexperienced handler. Fortunately her aggression is focused wholly on her sister, & no one else, lol, or she'd be too much to deal with. My husband loves her, & she loves him. When they go for walks she rests her nose on his hand the whole time, it's very sweet to watch.
However, I know of other EPI dogs from her lines....I've never heard of EPI associated with the OP's dogs lines....& so many other breeds are coming up with EPI diagnoses... are we sure this is genetic? Or could this have some other cause....? Be nice to know how this is passed along! jackie harris

Here is my other dog's pedigree that I had to put down not too long ago:

He was only 40 pounds at the end. I wonder if it came from the Zender side? I did not think that I would get another Epi dog that soon.

Well, the first thing that jumps out at me is they BOTH have the same dogs as grandsire and great-grandsire:Zender vom Lusondai and Udo van't Quentawald. Wonder if that's where it comes from? I think Udo van't Quentawald is a Dutch name. I haven't heard of many problems with epi in either German show lines or working lines, but I'm sure it's there. The gene IS recessive, so it skips generations, and both parents have to be carriers for it to appear.

Getting rid of the dog because it has EPI? Are you sure that's the right thing for the dog? Can't the breeder help out here?

Recessive don't skip generations, do they?

Plenty of German dogs have EPI.

EPI may be autosomal-recessive, although there is some evidence that it's not quite that simple, e.g. http://goo.gl/oN7D10. if it was auto-recessive, both parents need to be at least carriers for afflicted offspring to occur and the genetics and mating outcomes follow the chart below.

i know one epi dog that has been a multiple LGA,  BSP, and WUSV participant and mostly placed in the top ten or better.  i also know it was more work, especially at the beginning and with international travel, to keep him going. but once they got the food and supplement schedule fine-tuned, he wasn't fussed over any more, or less, than any other high-end competition dog. as far as i know, he's now enjoying his well-deserved semi-retirement as the over-seer of all ipo prospect training, general ass-kicker of old and new decoys, and service engineer of all couches.  having said that, i wasn't the one contacting the OP to send me the dog since it's a non-issue. far from it.
