Could someone tell me where to find a crate to ship a puppy? I was told that a 10 wk old puppy should use a #300 crate. What are these demensions and should I purchase one locally (if so who do you suggest?) or from the airlines. I'm new at this so any help would be grately appreciated. Thanks, Leo

Hi, Here is a link to some shipping requirements for Delta. http://www.delta.com/planning_reservations/special_travel_needs/pet_travel_information/pet_requirements_restrictions/index.jsp You will find crate dimensions and other requirements for shipping at this link. As far as purchasing a crate, if you buy online from a pet warehouse or on ebay, they are cheaper, just watch out for shipping and handling costs. I wouldn't ever buy used, what if the previous owner was sick with Parvo . . . ewwww. Or, I have purchased locally from a PetSmart. This is a little more expensive but more convenient. The airline crates were even more expensive than our PetSmart. Once puppy gets bigger I really like the folding black wire crates. These are nice for shows and hotels, very transportable. Easier to lug through a hotel without knocking someone over. :-) Also, you can get them really large with a divider. This helps with potty training by limiting the space puppy has to potty in the crate without stepping in it. Hope this helps.

Thanks Odinfan. I agree, I don't want to purchase a used crate. If I have no further use for the crate, I'm sure a rescue in my area could use it. Do you like Delta for shipping your pups? I haven't made any plans on who to use yet and I should have asked that question too. Thanks for your help, Leo

I don't ship alot of dogs, I prefer to drive whenever possible. However, Delta has the most stringent requirements for shipping. I like this, it shows concern for their 'cargo'. Maybe someone who ships alot of dogs can jump in here and recommend a carrier.

A medium size crate is what I use for pups from 8-10 weeks old. Dimeensions 27" long 20" wide and 19" high. Walmart has them for less than $40. I always use Delta. They are the only airlines that ships from MS. The only one i ever bought from Delta was more expensive. When you buy just be sure they airlines approved.

https://www.aa.com/content/travelInformation/specialAssistance/travelingWithPets.jhtml The above link are the requirements for American Airlines. They are fleet specific with the use of the 500 series crate, which you will not need for a puppy that young. If there is a transfer or change of plane involved, check with the specific airline(heat restrictions). American's is 85 Degrees F. I have been trying to get over to Frankfurt with a dog for over a month now, and can not get over through Dallas or Chicago. If the pet will not fit under the seat in front of you in a carry on bag, the charge to fly in the cargo area is 110 USD. If it slides under the seat in front of you, it is free.

odinfan....I am in the airline industry and trust me Delta's stringent requirements for shipping is not concern for their "cargo", it is protecting itself from law suits from customers. In the past, Delta bit the bullet on lawsuites and that started all the "requirements" that are now in place, by ALL the airlines.

Let me add that the dog under the seat in front of you is domestic only. On international flights everything goes in the cargo area. That 110 USD charge is for the 500 series crates. The smaller crates are cheaper.

Delta will not ship dogs cargo from 5/15-9/15.

I flew with a puppy under the seat from Germany to USA several times, so it works internationally too - at least with Delta. You just got let them know in advance that you plan to be traveling with a pet, because they only allow one pet per cabine per flight, I think. The best thing about flying with a puppy under the seat is that on a long flight you can take him/her to the lavatory, let him pee, and give some water or a little bit of food, and then they sleep through most of the flight. You can even have him sleeping in your lap - as long as he stays in a bag. Otherwise poor thing is all alone in a noisy cargo area...
