I have never had the need for a c-section (knock on wood!) with any of my dogs. I recently had someone ask me how long after a c-section is performed that you can breed the bitch again. I believe that the time frame is one year, but I thought I'd ask some of you other breeders out there who might be experienced in this area. What are your opinions? Thanks!

my vet said the next breed cycle if you want to and your bitch is in good health ect...they heal fast I guess

I see no reason why, if the bitch is in good shape and heals well, she couldn't be bred her next season.... they really bounce back so much quicker than we do!! We did a c-section once and Momma was nursing within an hour of surgery...

I have had one c-section done with my female and I waited a year, but it was not necessary. She did not require a c-section on either of the other two litters after that. My female also came home and immediately took care of her litter like nothing had happened.

I have heard differing opinions between different veterinarians as to how long one can wait when a bitch is in labor before doing a section. Two of my breeding friends just had to have it done. Does anyone have opinion, knowledge on how long it is safe to wait to see if the female whelps normally?

The generally accepted rule is to wait 4 hours before calling the vet between pups. If your bitch is not in distress. When I had my first litter via c-section one pup was born at 8 am, and I called my vet at noon. He was gone to lunch! They kept telling me he would call back. Fast forward to 4pm, we had a c-section and lost one puppy later that night. :-( She was not in any distress or pushing throughout this time, but one pup was too large to come through her pelvis. Small litter, large puppy. If she is straining hard for more than an hour and nothing is coming, get on the horn with them and let them know you are on your way in. As to how long they can go and deliver a live pup, well, I thought my bitch was finished at midnight and she produced a live puppy at 3pm. Yep, 15hrs later. She proceeded after pup four as if all were finished and napped. After 2 pm she started to have contractions, and at 3 she had a new girl. All are well. Oddly enough, the only pup who had any "problems" was the first born.
