Judy P

by Judy P on 04 December 2012 - 18:12

Linda was a member of our local GSD club and any of us would have helped with him.  I am so sick about this, I would come back and haunt my family if they ever did this to one of my dogs.

Yeah we already went through this trying to get Gretchen placed (she was put in boarding and doing terrible) but luckily she also got adopted, for GOOD I hope.  I had a talk with some friends about my dogs and made arrangements for them.  My family is not into dogs at all so I don't rely on them to help whether I'm alive or not.

It's all well and good to make arrangements with family OR friends, even better to have that in a written contract--but frankly, unless you make FINANCIAL provisions for your animals as well, there's a 50/50 chance whoever you made the arrangements with won't follow through when the need arises. Rarely do deaths occur well-scheduled so the caretakers have time to make adjustments prior to needing to take one's dogs. Saw this happen last year with someone many of us knew; she'd said she had everything taken care of, but when the time came, the person who was supposed to take the dogs said he couldn't do it...and by the time anyone else found out about it, it was too late to do anything about it.  The dogs were scattered to the wind [at best]...we were never able to get any answers as to what became of them. My wife and I have a account set aside and have already had a fellow club member agree to take the dogs and keep them and get control of the funds in our will.

If that's the case I'd honestly rather have my dogs creamted with me than tied to a fence at the shelter :(

Bob did they approve your app?

VKGSD, it would depend on what shelter...our two local shelters are no-kill unless necessary for medical or safety reasons [unprovoked biting of a person]--and they even have an outside kennel run with a dog house and a bowl of water in it, so the dog doesn't have to be tied to the fence.

Still, I'd rather (a) not put additional burden on the shelter's resources [it's a privately-run non-profit] and (b) have my dogs in the hands of people who know them and could best place them in good, stable homes; after seeing what happened with the woman I made reference to earlier, I had a trust set up to provide for whichever dogs I have at the time of my death, and that trust gets my life insurance [I have no dependants].  That way, the dogs are also not going to be a burden on the person(s) who will serve as their caretaker, either.

Hexe if the situation is urgent I agree but considering your point (b) no one has been able to find such a home on short notice.   This dog has been through almost TEN homes/places by now and we were told he is not good with cats, OK with older kids but unknown with younger, and not good with other male dogs.  Finding a home that can take him in at the drop of a hat and not just put him right back in a kennel or crate has not been possible.  I could drive up there right now and pull him but he'd just be in a crate in my basement, stressed out by yet another home with strange dogs that he wouldn't like with me not around to help him since I have to work 9 hours a day (my dogs are all used to this and have free reign of the house, and I don't take in fosters while I'm really busy at work).  At least at the shelter he is safe in a dog run with people letting him out several times a day.

If anyone hears anything please post. I may call later for an update, I just don't want to be a pest to them.  I had flyball last night and a team mate was a good friend of Linda's and she was fighting tears over this.

What a magnificent looking boy.  If a permanent home can't be found for him, I'd be interested in learning more about him.  I live in the Kansas City area and have 2 spayed female GSD's and show English Springer Spaniels.  I've been showing dogs since 1979 and am involved with English Springer Rescue of America.  I was the Missouri coordinator for some time.  We live on 6 acres and have plenty of room.

Thanks,
Tari
