I've used Tear Mender and have never had a problem, although it a good point about the allergy. In the future I'll test a very small spot for reaction a few days prior to setting an ear. I do not use pipe insulation, though, I make a cardboard mold. It's lightweight, thin, and falls out sooner, therefore allowing the ear to breathe more often, also leaves the ear canal completely free of blockage.

Yeah, I think the cardboard would probly be a better Idea.  The styfofoam was thick and I had to cut it long to hold his ear up correctly. Which caused a blockage and ear wax built up causing the ear infection. It wasn't latex allergy that caused the problem for me. The ear was smooth and there was no sign of a  rash or sign of irritation, but alot of people do have latex allergies and I'm sure dogs do too. So testing them first would be a good Idea. I don't breed my dogs, they are just my family pets. I have owned german shepherds for 17 years and have owend 8 of them since I was 10.. My second female I owend when I was 19 had one flopping ear and it bugged the crap out of me for years. I was going to be really upset if the same thing happend to Tagan. Im glad I did the glueing because he does look really good now. The ear looks much better now that I got all the fluid out and I am going to take him to the vet monday and get him fixed up. I still don't know if I would recommend this to anyone. It's going to depend on how easy it is to get rid of his ear infection. I hope he dont end up one of those dogs that has chonic ear infections that I have been reading about. I have never had a dog with an ear infection. Usally my dogs are pretty healthy. I loved the German Shepherds, they are my favorite breed. GSD's are the only breed that works out for me.  They are so clean, loyal and easy to train. They are so eager to please me, I love it.

The infection might simply be coincidental and unrelated to taping his ear.  Are you feeding him kibble with corn and/or wheat in it?

Anytime a dog's ear is formed/taped and glued...it runs the chance of an ear infection.
Moisture gets behind the "form" of (any kind), and creates the fungal bacteria....and lastly.. the infection.
It is very important to make sure the dog's ear(s) do not come in contact with moisture period...
IF an infection presents itself....take out the form, clean the ear..and apply an anti-biotic cream (lightly) on the infected area...and keep it dry & aired.
Many puppies get ear infections when "forming"......especially dogs that have their ears taped & wrapped.

The moisture is a goodpoint, Robin. Anytime I do a puppy's ear, I stress to the owner that it must be kept dry, and it isn't a good idea to do it in very humid weather, either.

JLB I am glad that that helped.I have seen MANY bad ears in the time I worked at the vet and had to deal with my showline I was raising have a simular issue cause the breeder wanted to mess with his ear (that was fine to begin with) and had that fome thing in there. It caused some infection due to the moisture and dirt. I was religious at flushing his ear once the form was removed. It cleared up. Oh and after you flush it take a dry cloth and try to get all the moisture out that you can. Cute pic of him at the fence.

Tagan made it back from Doc Greens and she said he had a very mild ear infection, She gave him an antibiotic shot and sent him home with a 15 day suppy of antibiotics, antibotic cream and anticeptic wipes to clean it with for the next couple of days. She said I did an excellant job flushing his ear out. Again thanks LAVK-9! Everyone loved him at the vet's office he had to stay there from open to close. A state trooper that was up there, doing some kind of investigation, fell in love with Tagan and did more petting, I think, than investigating. Everyone was in aww about how well behaved he was and friendly. There were cats and dogs running all over the place. Doc Green is a very busy vet, the best around here and everyone knows it. She says Tagan and Baily are her favorite patients:)

No prob JLB Glad Tagan got some antibiotics and will be all better.Remember...even if his ears look fine finish the meds. Cause if his ear didn't get better and you had to take him in again...the vet usually asks "did you use all the meds?" big pet peeve is when people say no.lol Then the vet will blame you.Atleast if you do and it doesn't work maybe he would need to be on something different and the vet can't blame you for not doing what they told you. I am sure Tagan will be fine though.
