Again, interesting. Seems odd a handler would intentionally or inadvertantly check the line on a track where they didn't know the placement of the articles...especially at this level of competition. It's not as if this is Zappia's first time at the international rodeo.

matt, that's why kyto said, " i can only hope one day we see all those dogs competing in all breed trials "--because that's not the case at present.

@haz: whoever you "hear" things from is an idiot. making it real simple: 846 - 279 + 294 = 861 < 864. yes, you have to drop a (lower) score; can't just add 30 to 846. christ. it's really not that hard, not that secret, and no innuendo or special insights required other than some basic, pre-school arithmetic. however, 294 > 292. heck, in this case 292 > 292 and that might be interesting.

@ bebo

I didnt have the points in front of me, hence "I hear".  Christ maybe you should relax...lol.  I still find it all very interesting ;).

@ mklevin i dont know about us selection but overhere in europe it vice versa, top dogs go to fci and majority of wusv competitors avoid mali's competition by staying in breedclub trials were mali's can't enter and only try to select for wusv

thats why i really would like to see all those 96+ scoring dogs at an fci trial to see the results there and i have a huge respect for those handlers who arent afraid of mali's competition even if it means they don't make the WC team selection

an all breed WC is the only trial were the answer to my first question could be given

a handler at that level is probably reading their dog.  I've never been at that level and I can tell when my dog finds an article and is about to walk it.  I'd rather lose points for handler help then missing the article.

This is probably a stupid question for most of you, but what would be considered handler help and a checked lead?

by mklevin on 13 October 2014 - 13:10

Kyto,

Don't know where you are at but that's not true for all of Europe.  High dogs from German BSP go to the WUSV not the FCI.  Most GSD owners aren't "afraid" of Mali's at all.

Gerdes the OB judge is well known for being generous in his scoring.  The relevant question isn't the absolute score but is he CONSISTENT?  I have always found him to be so and I have heard no complaints that he wasn't at the WUSV as well.

Your info on FCI selection is also incorrect.  The BREED clubs select the competitors for the FCI.  The various breeds get selected for the FCI by going to their respective breed club trials.  It's not avoidance, it's how the selection process goes.  Here in the US there is an all breed National Championship and there are no shortage of GSD's entered to take on the Mali's.

At the WUSV level, there is no inadvertant checking of the line.  It is all considered intentional by the judge.  The video is too far away for me to tell if Deb did or didn't check her dog at the articles.  A handler who uses strong help to down the dog at the article(checking the dog is one form) can be judged unsatisfactory on the articles which are 7 points a piece for a total of 21.  Many times in training your dog, you learn to read their body language and you can tell by watching them when they are at a corner and when they are at an article before anyone else realizes it.

BLitzen, a checked line is the handler doing a hard stop on the line, a bounce on the line or even a backward step to create the stop or bounce.  It's like the reins on a horse and you can communicate through the tracking line.

Hexe,

There is an all breed World Championship.  The FCI.  There is one for IPO, one for FH2, and one for Agility.
