A breeder can't get rid of his puppies, so wants to donate them to rescue. Is there really a market for them out there??? I can't even find them on the breed list here or to list them for sale. Needless to say, he isn't breeding them anymore!!! What Smile
Let me know PLEASE!!! I really don't need any more puppies, and especially a breed I know NOTHING about!!! steph

I will help- I could take a couple and rehome them to QUALIFIED homes. I know a bit about them. They aren't for the faint of heart and they can hurt people very badly if not handled properly from the start. You know how to get ahold of me, Steph. Let me know if there's anything I can do.

I have one who comes in to board, along with a Dogue de Bordeaux. She's a mush, but these are BIG dogs, and were bred to protect flocks from lions in S. Africa. She and her companion are totally untrained and never even wear a collar unless they are coming in to board. I've been trying to teach both dogs some manners, like sitting before I open the gate, so I don't get run over by them, but I haven't had an awful lot of luck with her. Other than the lack of manners, she's very sweet and has never caused me a problem.

She has entropion of the eyelid, which is common in the breed. $800 worth of surgery failed to fix it, and her eyes are full of pus, which she flings all over the walls of the kennel! Sad Smile

I wish I had room, my friend took one in that was given up to our trainer because he was a handful.  This person had 3 others but Thor was really self sufficient and independant, too much for them to handle at that time.  He turned out to be a great dog with lots of work.  Unfortunately, he developed hip and spine issues which I hear is rare.  This breed needs LOTS of room to run and early socialization.  You can PM me the information and I will see if either of my friends here in Florida are intersted or if my other trainer friend knows of anyone in Michigan.  I really wish I had room since Thor and the other 3 were a great introduction to the breed.  Only down side I see other than the size is their "flypaper" drool (as my son called it).  It made Hooch's head shaking covering the room in drool seem tame lol.

The boerborel that comes to my kennel doesn't drool but she more than makes up for it with her eye boogers. I have to scrub the walls of her kennel down really well every time she visits. The Bordeaux, OTOH, drools copiously. He is also a genetic disaster. Rarely have I ever seen a dog that's so easty-westy in front, and has such a terrible set of cowhocks in rear. He also has a 'broken' (kinked) tail! ....Roll eyes

Here's a bit about the breed: http://www.gentlegiantsrescue-south-african-boerboel-mastiffs.com/about-south-african-boerboel-mastiffs.htm#about

I know nothing about this particular rescue. Maybe Steph could check them out.

The breed is listed here, but not one of the most popular breeds.

Where are these puppies located?  As an owner of 2 Boerboels, I might be able to help.  I have connections with a lot of breed rescues which we help to place dogs with.  Currently there isn't an "official" Boerboel Rescue.

Please do not send them to Gentle Giants Rescue in CA.  They have a reputation as "dog flippers", pulling dogs and puppies from the shelters and then selling them for outrageous amounts.  Some people also call them dog brokers.  You can google "Gentle Giants Rescue scam" for hundreds of horror stories from people who have tried to adopt from them.

I don't know much about the state of the breed in this country, but the ones I know of are guardians in Africa, where it's ok to have trespassers killed by dogs. Thus, the ones I'm familiar with are probably "worse" than these, though these are imports so there's a chance they're pretty serious as well. My friend had a friend with 2 that had killed fleeing thieves. They don't reside in populated areas most of the time and are used primarily by targets of robbery and some farmers. They can be extremely aggressive to ANYONE they don't know and very protective of both property and people. I think it's irresponsible for most people to own them, especially in a "normal" setting. Many of them are set up for disaster and then they pay the ultimate price.
