It is time to retire my 27 year old Harness.  ( sad sad day)  Any thoughts on who has the easiest one to get on and off?  I have really arthritic fingers so trying to do buckles is super hard unless the leather is crazy soft.  My old one was a Amish made model that had the softest leather in the world due to a zillion dogs going through it.  It was just perfect...alas we must all retire at some point.  I will give it a proper and decent burial as it was one of the family.  " Helga" you will be missed :)

I use a Bridgeport one for Schutzhund but it's the typical one with buckles.  One of my dogs uses a ComfortFlex for flyball and it is BY FAR the easiest harness I've ever put on/off.  You slip it over the dog's head, velcro the side, and buckle (it's a clasp, so you're not feeding it through a buckle like a leather harness).  The dog does not have to step into it or put one leg through the front.

Leerburg has a padded two snap agitation harness. It looks nice but it is pricey at $100 and up

Hey if it lasts as long as the other one did over $100 isnt that bad :)  I got 27 years out of the last one :)  Thread was just starting to wear out on it this year, I didnt want the thread to break apart and put a helper in a pickle if it fell apart. Two snaps is a real bonus for me!  I was pm'ed a biothane model last night, anyone have any long term experience with the material?

I am looking for a harness too and I am wondering: 1. Does it matter if the buckles are on the chest plate vs higher on the neck/shoulder area? 2. Are the snaps better than the buckle? 3. Rivets vs stitching, does it matter? Thanks!

Botanica,
these are just my observations over the years.  You want the chest plate to be a bit lower on the chest to avoid cutting off the air in the dog.  Buckles should be about the halfway mark.  Buckles are better than snaps, the snaps can literally snap in half.  However for myself I require the snap because of arthritic fingers. Much easier to put on and take off.  Stitching is vastly superior to rivets.  Rivets pop out.  Hopefully that helps. Paying more for soft leather is DEFINATELY a plus , but biothane interests me.  We use it in our endurance tack for the horses and it is sooooo easy to clean and it is super soft.

Thank you, Brynjulf. I've looked around and it seems that most harnesses are with snaps these days and it is almost impossible to tell from the pictures if they are stitched or just riveted. Please let me know your thoughts on the biothane if you do get it.

Brynjulf,
I have the harness that DenWolf posted in the Biothane material. Here's where I ordered it from:http://www.allk-9.com/padded-all-weather-quick-release-dog-harness-p-835.htm
Some Pro's and con's I've experienced with this particular harness:
PRO: Biothane material is fantastic......easy to clean.....will not absorb moisture....strong, doesn't stretch......fairly pliable/ not rigid...overall...love this material in a harness.
Chest plate.....nicely padded....good size and when adjusted properly fits nicely.
         Buckle hardware for fitting adjustments
         Snaps for easy on/off
Handle big enough to get your hand in and out of easily.

CON: The pad for the snaps is not quite big enough and the snaps will move off of padding when tension from the leash is applied.
The hardware is not solid brass or stainless.
I would have preffered the snaps to be installed with the clip opening up instead of down against the pad.

Happy harness shopping :)

Cheri
