Do you al in the UK have problems with ants? Here in florida we have to track real early on cool mornings, other wise we get fire ants attacking the bait. And nothing sucks worse for a dog wose than a mouth full of fire ants!
I've never had birds steal my bait and we do have a lot of crows and seagulls. Mostly it's the darn ants! And Natural balence seems to attract them the least, or frozen bits of bait keeps them at bay.
I've also used a small container of kibble as the "Jackpot" to keep the ants out of my prize.

Natural Balance roll food, or hot dog slices.

At the start I use something they really love. Gets there attention and reinforces the job at hand. Then again at the end. Raw beef through the track.

I've been using boiled chicken gizzards/hearts cut into small pieces.  They blend in good and when I step on them they don't get too squishy like liver and some of the roll type foods.  AND my dogs are tracking great.  Will do an FH with my male in the spring.

Most times we use what's leftover in the fridge.
Wife's dog got prime rib, prosciutto and shrimp yesterday.  Tongue Smile

Leftovers are never that bad in our house Susie Wink Smile

A dog trainer friend in Belgium showed me a little trick and I was wondering what you guys thought about it.....
He takes raw beef liver, ties it with twine (string) so that it drags on the ground between his feet.
He lays the track, dragging the liver and at the end he cuts the string and leaves the liver for the reward.

I tried it a few times and the dog tracks without lifting his nose.  It is awkward for me though cuz I have no coordination and I need to go slow or run the risk of stepping on itSad Smile.
Other than that it seems to work really well.

Hi Dragonfry

No I wouldn't say we have a problem with ants. In fact I can't personally think of a time I ever did. The biggest problem can be the crows I am sure they know the sight of a tracking pole Although in saying that they don't like kibble very much LOL

You CAN get a problem with ants, if you drag a trail over an ants nest.
But we dont have fireants, 'Fry, so its less of a big deal. LOL
