Thank you ,Pineridge, for yesterday's added, well-considered comments: you make much of importance of doing one's homework in selecting the right sire, and I can't agree more.
I was caught badly only recently by using a 'winning' stud, and ending up with pups with chronically defective jaws --- only to discover later that Breeders more 'in the club' were well aware of this sire's propensity to throw such offspring.
As you say, Breeder honesty is all-important here. The trouble is though, that many automatically tend to 'rubbish' another Kennel's stock, and it's often difficult to separate fact from fiction. And, as said, with some Breeders disposing of a 'top sire's' defective progeny 'on the quiet', does little to make for an informed market!

EXACTLY !!! And sorry to say - that my beloved male
who was everything we ever wanted in a good friend
and the 4th generation of our dogs - had, himself
about 8 litters - and one of them, when he was bred to
a very well known show-line (all amercian- mostly from California) produced lovely puppies -- some of which
had to be destroyed due to cleft palets, and others
as if that wasn't enough -- had some horrendous problem with their diaphrams and also had to be euthanized !!! Now it does take TWO TO TANGO !! and
you can't blame one side exclusively -- BUT --- ISN'T
IT A BIT ODD -- than 6 of his other 7 litters were to
German dogs and there were no problems whatsoever -- and the American Bitch, combined in such a way as to
create such a disaster -- Of course, the wonderful
owners blamed my boy EXCLUSIVELY !!! Like their female wasn't even in the room when it happened --
Later, much later, we put the pieces together -- she
had been given heavy drugs for a fungal infection on her fact while she was pregnant !!! and our vet felt
that could have affected the whelps adversely --
Of course, my male was never exhonerated !! But his
10 year old children are still with us !!! The end !!
NOTHING IS EASY !!
