spoke with a friend with a rescue in the bordering state. She just emailed the shelter director, who she knows, to say if the pups are there, she will take them. She is a lawyer and will be in court today, but will check her messages.

they need colostrum. the goats milk will work very well, but they need some colostrum. maybe the vet has some.

I can't help sparing a thought for the poor bitch who birthed these puppies. She must be so confused, if she's even still alive.

one of my friend's GSDs is in labor right now, I'm going there in about 30 minutes to take over the "mid-wifing"
too bad the pups are so far away...if there was any way they could be transported to Columbus, OH I could get them colostrum and either fostered on the dam having pups now or bottle-raise them. I have plenty of experience hand-raising pups on bottle and tube-feeding.
Like Melba says, they should be just fine for transport via car, as long as they are fed and cleaned every few hours during the trip.
I will check back on this thread later this evening.

Oh yes, I cannot even begin to imagine how frantic the mother is :( What the hell is wrong with people, and what rescue WOULDNT take in 6 PB GSDS???? The jackasses didnt even attempt to find a rescue for them???????? This has to go down in the record books as one of the worst cases of animal cruelty, ever :(

Thanks, Euroshep! Hopefully the shelter will call back my friends rescue in Pa that said they would take them, if they are still there. I have a horrid feeling, though, that these little lives were snuffed out :( How could they survive being in a shelter, without being fed? :( :( The apathy of some of mankind has reached new heights :(

The policy of many 'shelters' is to euthanize pups at birth, and sometimes even pregnant mammas, as they are NOT equpped to handle newborns.
[sigh] I guess in some ways it as seen as a kindness, because they would likely succumb to disease in such a dirty, cold environment. At the very least, Momma would be frantic with worry with all the dogs barking around her.

Depending on shelter they will either euth them or most have very dedicated volunteers that are use to taking in new born puppies with / without their mothers. I volunteer this service with my local shelters. If they didn't have a volunteer to take the puppies or a local vet to feed & keep warm then their fate looks grim. Very sad those poor puppies.

Time is of the essence, but if you can get them on the surrogate mom they can survive. Frozen colostrum is available to protect the whelps. I would take the surrogate to the pups, along with auxilliary heat source like hot water in bottles wrapped in towels.
