wrong there Joan, where we want possesiveness in policedogs for detection, the huntingbreeds are bred and selected for NOT being possesive and have a soft mouth,

people are trying to get these dogs past testing with soft and lightweightballs, iff we would test current TSA dogs on a kong or even PVC or metal, my guess is 90 % would fail and NOT be purchased by any other agency

furthermore if we talk focus and intensity, also huntingbreeds have nothing on shepherds

but some idiot made this plan, and even now when they are paying WAAAYYY  more for a huntingbreed single, than for a shepherd single, they will still not get the numbers, and the once they will get are weaker than average shepherds

Duke, I'm wrong about what?

I hope you could read that " all dogs are the same but wear different clothes" was sarcasm. It happens to be the opinion of the general public...surely you don't think I believe that.

No need to lecture me the differences between bird dogs and gsd. You need to save that for your clients that are going to be ditching your pointy eared dogs for bird dogs. Lol

@Duke:

I said those kind of jobs are taken. That is the reality wether you like it or not.

Where have you been that you don't know this.

When is the last time you saw a  GSD guide dog for the disabled (for example)

I fully agree that the GSD is the best breed for any job.

hmmm Joan, sarcasm and others are hard to "get " in writing LOL

@ allen, I do know of some, even from my breeding, but agree, Iwouldnot sell a high prey drive dog for a job like that

Agree, Duke. I should have put sarcasm thingy..../s

Prager

Allan1955: Remember we used to crop ears from breeds like Doberman, Great Dane, Boxer and Pitt bulls to make them look more serious/aggressive.

Prager: that is misguided PC opinion. We crop ears on these dogs because floppy ears are unnatural and thus more prone to injury and infection due to lack of ventilation. :) This necessity prompted breeders to crop ears. Now the PC crowd thinks that cropping ears is cruel where injuries and infections - I guess - are not.

LOL next someone will say that since floppy ears are unnatural and more prone to injury and infection we should not breed dogs with floppy ears. I can run with this for a while. Like TSA then will stop using dogs at all because they are either pointy eared intimidators or floppy ears unnatural degenerates. Thus they will use Rats or Chicken or whatever for their detection. But rats carry black plague and other diseases and some people are afraid of birds.........God, we are fked up!!!! :)
I hope all this just a red herring.

sorry but i can't see any reasons for expressed in here so much dramatization.
could be because i not breed and sells the dogs?
whatever, if some organization decided to move away from GSD breed, it's not end of the world.

Prager, when John or Merry in mass willing to buy GSD just because they like that dog's noble looks and at same time prefer those dogs to be easy handlable "couch potato" or hysterical sports idiots - this in fact bring huge impact on initial purpose and overall development of breed itself.

I try to stay away from commenting but have to ask Prager what he means by this sentence,  " We crop ears on these dogs because floppy ears are unnatural and thus more prone to injury and infection due to lack of ventilation. :

Are all these breeds mentioned not BORN with flopped ears? from when they were created they have floppy ears, I have never heard of one being born with pricked ears. So how is it unnatural??? it's natural for these breeds to have flopped ears!!!!

by joanro on 28 December 2018 - 19:12

I'm with you, mrdarcy.
If it was true, that flop ears ( I prefer drop ears) were a health risk, then all the hounds would have cropped ears.
In fact, the Doberman ears have been cropped to give them a less houndy look or less friendly.
The pit and other breeds, such as the Caucasian mountain dog, the ears are cropped to prevent tearing during fights.
The dog I had with horrible ear infections that she was shipped to me with, was a gsd. We ended up having to crop her ears because of so many hematomas and surgery to correct...all because of ear infection that lasted six years she before she died......nothing would clear the infection up.... So much for prick ears being more healthy than drop ears.
