Training is going well with Elsa. She has been at the training center since November 2nd. In that time she has mastered her basic obedience. Working well on and of leash. They are working on long stays with her. They have her already bracing and going down if my daughter falls to pick her up and she is already working with the harness.  Just thought I would give an update

I only read a few of posts to this guy's question, but some of you are very wrong.  I have been training mobility assistance dogs for over ten years.  It is not illegal to have a service dog that is trained in protection, according to the Americans with Disablities Act.  It is just considered politically incorrect by some who do not understand the nature of protection work.  The non-profit service dog companies depend on donations, so they like cute pictures of lab dogs with kids all around the guy in the wheel chair.  They don't consider German Shepherds because it looks too scary or is too protective of the handler.  For me it depends on the client as to whether I will do protection training for a service dog.   I get a lot of crap from hippy trainers that don't think it is right.  For me, if the person is mentally and pysically able to handle protection training then I will help them.  Here are a couple of videos of dogs in my training, past and present, for mobility service work.  Lets see if anyone can guess which dogs are protection trained and which ones are not.  Just to be clear I am not even close to the best trainer I know, and I make mistakes.  The handlers in the videos are not professional dog trainers.  They are part of our owner-trained service dog program.  They come to class 2 or 3 times a week and are expected to do their homework between classes.  So as the training director any mistakes should be directed at me.  One of the girls in the video handling her dog is only twelve years old.  We don't need to hurt feelings here.  I am a big boy and can take anything some might dish out.   This issue comes up on here every so often and I have to have my say.

So, who can pick out the protection trained dogs?

by Gustav on 26 December 2012 - 00:12

Nice to have factual information as opposed to opinions on the issue of legality of dog being able to do both.......glad to see your dog is doing well...not surprised if the initial trainer who saw her three times felt she was capable...good luck!

So the dog is 7 mo and the trainer according to him, will be able to train her in 5 mo  to do   "personal protection, service dog and search and rescue/tracking with her"  On top of it you want to do SchH with the dog which should then also be practiced at that age.  SchH tracking and S&R tracking is mostly contradictory in principle.
In Czech we say 11 trades and the 12th is poverty. In another words dog will at best know many thing little bit.
He  must be hell of a trainer or the dog will be 1/2 ass done for a lot of money and will not retain it's training. Or he will stretch you along for a while longer for some extra cash because the dog "will not do as well as originally expected." .  Also  I have not seen any 1 year old personal protection dogs in my life. To train S&R takes about a year+ and in all above trainings  the owner should participate in training and not just take sessions.
Next thing I have not seen any 6 years old to  be able to establish leadership position over a dog and handle it effectively and independently. The age for that is about 12 years +.
All I think is bunch of BS and I am willing to apologize if proven wrong.

Training is going well as some has suggested they didn't think everything could be done by April 1st and that has proven to be correct. S&R is well under way and all of the service dog work is complete. We will begin in earnest this week on the personal protection. No extra money involved for taking longer. We have a signed contract stating his job to be complete. I have no concerns as I live in a town with all of the major sports franchises and he does a large majority d their dogs as well as for other athletes outside of the area. I will give another update when we finish the Personal protection

Good for you!  The right dog and commitment can work wonders!

So I am by no means a search and rescue expert but they have been working with her on her tracking / S&R.    Yesterday when I arrived before they brought her out they to start working they told me to go outside (they have about an acre of land they train on) and walk around the field zig zagging etc circle some of the obstacles and hide somewhere behind one of the sheds or blinds.  There is about a 20 ft wide ashphalt road that goes through it.  The trainer had no idea where I hid.  She came out and worked great found me with no problem at all.  Was really exciting to see her do so well.  They said she picked it up(tracking in general) quicker than any dog they have trained for S&R.  She kept her nose down the entire time with one exception on the pavement where she lost the scent for a second picked it up in the air and went on back on the ground.  They said it was good she was able to air scent vs ground but they were not ready for her to start doing that yet?  Does that make sense?
