Lady Frost....
Wonderful pictures...I love the tree blossoms ...: )
Are the flowers on the ground creeping phlox?...That's what is looks likes to me....I have never had any luck with creeping phlox. I have the tall garden phlox that does very nicely....: )
The shrubs appear to be azaleas...Are those orange flowers?....I had an azalea with orange flowers that smelled amazing....FYI azaleas are pretty poisonous if I remember correctly....Be careful about the pups munching on them...: )
Deanna... : )

Lady Frost...LoL..
The fact that your dog was taking a little siesta on that beautiful carpet of phlox gave you away...lol....Prince gets away with a lot , but messing with my flowers is a very big no..no..;)
Most avid gardeners would faint if they stumbled across that scene..lol..;)

We are going to try a rose bed for the first time up here in the mountains of Pa. The ground is so rocky we have to make raised beds for them. We've broken up the soil as well as we can, & purchased dirt & bone meal & some sort of rose potion......any tips from you gardeners would be appreciated!
Thanks!
And Don....please don't send ANY pictures of your garden....LOL! Your oak needs pruning, I'd cut it back hard, those boulders have got to go as well. After that I think you'll need to trim that lawn a lot less......LOL,LOL!

Kalibeck, If you want easy blooms all season long, look into the KNOCK OUT variety of roses......
And Martha Stewart says use Epsom Salts around the base of the plants.... roses love them! Sprinkle around the base about a half cup, work in with trowel and water.

tips: use natural wood ashes to add potash where needed
take soil samples if different types of plants are being planted
know what each plant likes and ammend the soil to specs
plant where they will flourish not survive. some plants like shade, partial shade and full son.
make sure you know which ones are light feeders or heavy feeders
make sure the right ammount of water is put on each species. always give time for the plants to dry out before night fall NEVER WATER AT NIGHT!! there are other things to consider but this will get you thinking.
NUMBER UNO 1 IS TO NOT GET MORE GARDEN THAN YOU CAN UPKEEP.

because on high humid nights along with the nitrogen we fertilize with sets up a fungi that will destroy a lawns or delicate flowers. in turf it causes a fungi called brown spot.
in our plants it causes grey mold and other fungi.
if you water in the afternoon, just make sure the plants, turf have ample time to comlletly dry out.
thick nice turf is the worst for this because it don't dry down next to the soil.
my sprinkler system starts watering at 4 am.
